BTS, a Korean boy band representing the success of K-pop around the world, was named the winner of the James A. Van Fleet Award 2020 by The Korea Society in the United States on October 7, 2020. The band was credited as one of the reasons for the closer relationships between South Korea and the U.S.
In their acceptance speech, BTS mentioned that 2020 marks 70 years after the Korean War: "We will always remember this painful history shared by our two countries and the countless men and women who sacrificed their lives".
However, this speech by BTS provoked many Chinese netizens, who condemned BTS for "humiliating China". Posts attacking BTS surged in China. A comment posted on a social media platform that read, "Get lost, BTS is dead" garnered over 1.66 million 'likes' and over 36,000 comments in China.

China Claims "Hundreds of Espionage Cases" from Taiwan; Broadcasts "Confession Video" from Taiwanese Man
On Oct 11, one day after Taiwan's national day, China's state media, CCTV, announced that China's national security bureau has recently arrested a large number of "spies" from Taiwan involved in hundreds of espionage cases.
30 minutes after the news was reported by the CCTV, Global Times, a newspaper owned by Chinese Communist Party government, published a detailed story of how a Taiwanese called Lee Meng-chu (李孟居) was suspected of "violating national security" by participating in Hong Kong's Anti-ELAB movement in August 2019.
According to this China's state owned media, Lee arrived in Hong Kong on August 18 and took some photos at the protest. Lee crossed the border to Shenzhen the next day. He was later arrested in Shenzhen when he was about to leave on Aug 20, 2019.
On Oct 31, 2019, Chinese authorities authorized the national security bureau to "officially arrested" Lee, but Lee has reportedly been detained by China since August.
Lee's confession was broadcasted on China's CCTV. In the video, Lee "confessed" that he was "swayed" by pro-Taiwan independence sentiments. He also said that he "regretted" joining the activities that "went against China and brought chaos to Hong Kong". He said in front of the camera that "Taiwan independence" and "Hong Kong independence" are "dead-ends".
According to the Guangdong branch of China's national security bureau, there were many more cases related to the involvement of Hong Kong affairs. The Chinese authorities warned that any infringement of Hong Kong's national security law may result in sentences lasting from 3 years in jail, all the way to a life sentence.
After the news came out on China's state media, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (#MAC) condemned China for causing harm to the cross-strait relationship and affecting the normal daily life of Taiwanese.

On Oct 10, 2020, as Taiwan was celebrating its the National Day, Google also wrongly displayed the establishment year of the Republic of China (#ROC), stating the year as 1949.
Based on history, the Republic of China was established in 1912 following the collapse of the Qing dynasty. The ROC had been run by the Nationalist Government (#Kuomintang; #KMT) with a base in China, until the Communist Chinese Party's takeover of China in 1949. The year 1949 displayed by Google was the time when the KMT was relocated to Taiwan and the establishment year of the People's Republic of China (#PRC), but not the ROC.
Taiwan's Apple Daily contacted Google Headquarters in the US. Google replied by saying that they needed to undergo further investigations in order to come arrive at a conclusion for the problem.

U.S. St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported in on Friday (Oct 9) that Liu Qiang, a representative of the Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) at Webster University's Confucius Institute, died after police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided his house in connection with a child pornography case on October 6. BLCU said it received a message from Webster University's Confucius Institute that the teacher had died in the morning October 7.
Liu had served as a representative of the BLCU and the Chinese dean of the Confucius Institute at Webster University since January 2019. According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch's report, the spokesperson for the university said in e-mail, that the school learned of Liu’s death from the police on the 7th of October. The report quoted St Louis police, that police and the FBI searched Qiang's apartment on Tuesday (October 6) evening amid a child pornography investigation. Canadian Consulate allowed to Visit Two China-Detained Canadian Citizens Online, Trudeau to discuss with Trump, Seeking for their Release
After detention of Meng Wenzhou, the daughter of Huawei founder, by Canada in December 2018. China arrested and prosecuted two Canadian citizens, a former diplomat Michael Kovrig and a businessman Michael Spavor. The Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs said today (October 11) that the ambassador to China, Dominic Barton, was granted virtual consular access to the two men on Friday and Saturday respectively, for the first time since January. Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau discussed this matter with the US President Donald Trump on a phone call and thanked Trump for U.S. support in seeking the immediate release of the two Canadian citizen.
The Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada issued a statement, deeply concerned by the arbitrary detention by Chinese authorities, saying that the last consular access was on January 13 and 14, and calling on China for the immediate release of two persons. In the second half of "Focus interview", the program said Lee went to Shenzhen to film military vehicles and people armed police (PAP) training, then sent the videos back to Taiwan. He was arrested at a ferry terminal while preparing to leave the country. The program said that the state security authorities arrested Lee, and the 16 videos and 48 photos taken were a Chinese state secret. If a professional intelligence agency analyzed the data, they would be able to reveal the number of personnel, the main combat equipment, as well as the intention and the scale of operations of the entire army. Therefore, this action endangered China's national security.
It's breaching due process of law and violating of judicial human rights, said Mainland Affairs Council of Taiwan
According to the Taiwan media ETtoday and SET News, the MAC said that the Chinese government required the involving persons to interview at the official media, admitting their crime, and repent in front of the camera, which does not comply with due process of law. The international community has unanimously condemned this kind of inappropriate accusation of violating judicial human rights. The council also expressed their opposition, calling on the mainland authorities to stop practicing these as soon as possible.
The Mainland Affairs Council emphasizes that it has been in contact with Lee's family since the incident to keep abreast of the case and to provide the necessary assistance.
