WTO complaint “next step” in tariff dispute between Australia and China, trade ministery says.
The trade minister Simon Brimingham said on 29 November the trade conflicts were not just harming Australia but threated global trade confidence. Canberra will take its complaints to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Due wine tariffs imposed after barley tariffs announced in May, at least 60 ships laden with coal from Australian producers have also been denied permission to enter Chinese ports, leaving them waiting off the coast while Australian authorise attempt to find a resolution to the standoff.
The wine decision would not be part of any immediate complaint to the WTO as it was still being described as an “interim application of tariffs”.

European Union condemns China over “irresponsible tweet about Australian military”.
The statement from the EU and Japan come after the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, France and New Zealand criticised the actions a Chinese foreign ministry official in tweeting a digitally created image depicting an Australian solider cutting the throat of a child in Afghanistan.
Japan’s embassy in Canberra reiterated that “trade should never be used as a tool to apply political pressure”, and Japan would “duly consider how to exercise our third party rights if Australia proceeds with their case” at the World Trade Organization against China’s barley tariffs.
“We consider the deliberate dissemination of a fabricated image via social media accounts affiliated with China’s ministry of foreign affairs to be irresponsible, insensitive and not at all constructive, particularly given the subject in question,” the EU’s spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy , Nabila Mascali said

The Australian media reported that the Five Eyes Alliance, which consists of Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, has recently discussed how to deal with the situation and has not ruled out imposing trade sanctions against China. Australia has just formally filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization today against the China-initiated trade war.
According to reports, the Five Eyes Alliance is negotiating to respond to China’s trade sanctions against Australia. The U.S. is actively considering the possibility that each of the five countries may impose trade restrictions on Chinese goods or services, or that only Australia may impose punitive tariffs on China. The other four countries are open to express their support.
Fergus Hanson, the Director of International Cyber Policy Centre of Australian Strategic Policy Institute, said that the Five Eyes could also refer to Article 5 of NATO. It establishes a collective defence mechanism for member states which can respond to China's trade sanctions against Australia. “Only in this way can let the CCP realize that it (the trade sanctions) is a two-way street. Our current approach is not a solution to this problem."

After a year of steadily worsening relations between Beijing and Canberra, China has imposed a raft of trade measures blocking billions of dollars’ worth of Australian commodities.
The restrictions targeting shipments of beef, barley, coal, lobster, wine and timber have taken on many forms. Some measures are precise, such as anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on barley, allowing Australia to escalate the matter to the World Trade Organization. Others, ranging from verbal notices to bans on individual companies, are less clear-cut.

Australia’s trade minister threatened to take China to the World Trade Organization over its “unjustifiable” decision to increase duties on Australian wine imports for up to five years. China’s commerce ministry announced levies ranging from 116.2% to 218.4% would be slapped on Australian wine imports from Mar 30.
Australia also called for the WTO to investigate Chinese tariffs on barley imports, following a series of economic sanctions or disruptions to Australian products to China’s vast market.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries have reached their lowest since the deadly 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.

Australian PM calls for WTO reform as tensions with China mount
The World Trade Organization must have a binding dispute settlement system to address the growing use of "economic coercion", Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Wednesday, as Canberra moves to win the support of G7 nations in its dispute with China.
Relations with China, already rocky after Australia banned Huawei from its nascent 5G broadband networking in 2018, cooled further after Canberra called this year for an independent investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, first reported in central China last year.
China responded by imposing tariffs on Australian commodities, including wine and barley and limited imports of Australian beef, coal and grapes, moves described by the United States as "economic coercion".

China banned the import of Taiwan pineapple in March 2021. Chinese General Administration of Customs announced the suspension of importing sugar apples and java apples from September 20. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council counterattacked this evening, expressing dissatisfaction that China is unwilling to negotiate with Taiwan in accordance with the cross-strait agreement mechanism, damaging Taiwan’s agriculture and cross-strait relations. Taiwan Agricultural Committee indicated that they would send complaints to WTO and would increase the export to markets, such as Hong Kong.
The China Custom General Administration (GACC) Animal and Plant Quarantine indicated that quarantine pests, Planococcus minor, were found in Taiwan sugar apples and java apples several times this year. In order to prevent the risk of plant disease, GACC announced the suspension on importing Taiwan sugar apple and java apple from tomorrow.

The US Trade Representative accused Beijing of repeatedly failing to live up to trade commitments.
It published its annual review of China's compliance with the deal that gave it membership of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Wednesday.
China said it is a firm supporter of and important contributor to the WTO.
The US report is the first since President Biden's appointee Katherine Tai took up office as the top US trade negotiator, and it lays out US concerns about China's trade policies.
