'Their goal is to destroy everyone': Uighur camp detainees allege systematic rape

Tursunay Ziawudun spent nine months inside China's vast and secretive system of internment camps in the Xinjiang region. She fled Xinjiang after her release and is now in the US.

Ziawudun said women were removed from the cells "every night" and raped by one or more masked Chinese men. She said she was tortured and later gang-raped on three occasions, each time by two or three men.

The BBC also interviewed a Kazakh woman from Xinjiang who was detained for 18 months in the camp system, who said she was forced to strip Uighur women naked and handcuff them, before leaving them alone with Chinese men. Afterwards, she cleaned the rooms, she said.

The Chinese men "would pay money to have their pick of the prettiest young inmates", she said.

Asked if there was a system of organised rape, she said: "Yes, rape."

Qelbinur Sedik, an Uzbek woman from Xinjiang, was among the Chinese language teachers brought into the camps and coerced into giving lessons to the detainees. Sedik has since fled China and spoken publicly about her experience.

The women's camp was "tightly controlled", Sedik told the BBC. But she heard stories, she said - signs and rumours of rape.

The Alarming Human Toll of Cheap Stuff ‘Made in China’

In the aftermath of 2020 — a year that saw both the expansion of a vast detention and forced labor system in the western Chinese province of Xinjiang and a homebound global population increasingly reliant on goods delivered anonymously to their doorstep — Pang’s book feels timely and urgent. Her argument starts here, in the room with the mushrooms, and goes like this: that the way we consume is unsustainable; that things as seemingly trivial as paper mushrooms and Halloween decorations are entangled in a system that hides atrocity by design and makes complicity — with authoritarian governments, with dangerous working conditions and even with religious persecution — part of modern life. Pang, a freelance journalist who grew up in a Mandarin-speaking household, is most effective when she is drawing out these juxtapositions, putting production and torture matter-of-factly side by side.

Foreign Engineer Said the Official Software for #BeijingWinterOlympic Operates with Background Voice Recorder, Sending to China's Server

Some investigators find out by reverse engineering that "My 2022", a smartphone software for Beijing Winter Olympics, has a suspicion of sending users' voice recordings in the background.

The Chinese government requires all athletes, coaches and staff to download the application for health tracing. Users have to input personal details, such as passport information and health declaration form, 14 days before the arrival.

"My 2022" also provides functions for voice call, file transfer, and browsing news reports related Winter Olympics.

Jonathan Scott, one of the investigators, indicated that although "My 2022" operates in the background, the status will change from active to operating, in order to have the permission to monitor, and send all voice recordings to the servers in China.

However, Scott did not explain the principle behind and the app stores also claim "My 2022" not to collect users' data.
