🇯🇵 🇹🇼 “If a major incident happened [in Taiwan], it would not be strange at all if it touches on a situation threatening survival," said Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Aso. "If that is the case, Japan and the US must defend Taiwan together." The number two highest Japanese official further noted "the situation over Taiwan is becoming extremely intense" - especially following a Xi speech days ago wherein he vowed to enforce Chinese sovereignty over the island.

China Blocks Didi From App Stores Days After Mega U.S. IPO

China’s cyberspace regulator ordered app stores to remove Didi Chuxing, dealing a major blow to a ride-hailing giant that just days ago pulled off one of the largest U.S. initial public offerings of the past decade.

The Cyberspace Administration of China announced the ban Sunday, citing serious violations on Didi Global Inc.’s collection and usage of personal information, without elaborating. That unusually swift decision came two days after the regulator said it was starting a cybersecurity review of the company.

Tencent uses facial recognition to snag child gamers

Chinese tech giant Tencent has rolled out a facial recognition "midnight patrol" function to root out children masquerading as adults to get around a government curfew on underage gamers.China bans people under 18 from playing online games between 10pm and 8am, part of a raft of rules introduced to weed out the excesses of gaming culture among the youth, from worsening eyesight to online addiction. But many young players have navigated the restrictions by using gaming accounts registered by adults.Online gaming giant Tencent this week moved to close those loopholes by implementing facial verification checks on anyone playing with an adult ID after the curfew.Tencent also said it would start requiring users to pass a facial recognition test when changing safety settings designed to let parents limit their children's game usage, as "some children have stolen their parents' phones" to modify the settings."Kids, put your phones away and go to sleep," the company said in a social media post Tuesday. The new functions will initially be used on around 60 mobile games, including the massively popular "Honor of Kings" multiplayer battle game, which boasts over 100 million daily users.Chinese regulators have scrambled to keep up with the country's voracious appetite for video games, especially those played on mobile phones, which have been blamed for social ills including online addiction and near-sightedness in children.Since 2018 the government has introduced a host of new rules, including harsher restrictions on virtual depictions of violence as well as a quota on the number of online games approved each year. China scales down skyscraper drive after “unexpected wobbling” in tall structures

Beijing is clamping down on the proliferation of high-rises constructed in China after hazard scares such as the “unexpected wobbling” of a 72-storey Shenzhen building that was shut down in May.

One HK University professor claimed “It’s primarily for safety. Extremely tall buildings are more like signature projects for mayors and not necessarily efficient.”

Buildings cannot now be constructed over 500m tall - five of the world’s 10 are currently found in China - with 250m+ buildings under “strict limits” from local authorities.
