China scales down skyscraper drive after “unexpected wobbling” in tall structures

Beijing is clamping down on the proliferation of high-rises constructed in China after hazard scares such as the “unexpected wobbling” of a 72-storey Shenzhen building that was shut down in May.

One HK University professor claimed “It’s primarily for safety. Extremely tall buildings are more like signature projects for mayors and not necessarily efficient.”

Buildings cannot now be constructed over 500m tall - five of the world’s 10 are currently found in China - with 250m+ buildings under “strict limits” from local authorities.
