India bans 118 more Chinese apps: Tencent's "PUBG" and Alipay on the list

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEIT) announced the banning of 118 more Chinese applications on September 2, including the popular Tencent mobile game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG). Other apps including Alipay, AlipayHK, search engine Baidu, several dating websites and even selfie-editing apps were also on the list.

In its statement, MEIT alleged that the 118 banned apps promote activities that are “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, Defence of India, Security of State and Public Order”. PUBG is popular among young people in India with an estimated several million players.

The worst bloodshed between India and China in 45 years broke out at the border earlier in June, leaving at least 20 Indian soldiers dead. The media reported that the PLA raided with spiked clubs, but Indian soldiers met the attack with only fists and stones. The two sides fought for up to seven hours, with the conflict taking place on a steep mountain ridge, resulting in many soldiers from both sides falling off the cliff and freezing to death. Since then, tensions between the two sides have grown and eventually India announced a ban on 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok.

WeChat Becomes a Powerful Surveillance Tool Everywhere in China

WeChat has become one of the most powerful tools in Beijing’s arsenal for monitoring the public, censoring speech and punishing people who voice discontent with the government. Its dominance in Chinese society has become more entrenched in 2020 due to remote working and learning during the coronavirus pandemic.

Tencent and Alibaba developed health-rating systems for government as one of the main contact-tracing tools to contain the spread of the coronavirus. The health codes embedded within WeChat and Alipay have become essential passes in China for entering residences, office buildings and accessing public transportation.

WeChat uses client-to-server encryption, which grants Tencent full access to data between senders and recipients, as opposed to end-to-end encryption, said Fergus Ryan, an analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank created by the Australian government.

China’s internet firewall has long blocked foreign sites and messaging apps, including Google, WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook, but these can be accessed via virtual private networks (VPN).

“Some of my friends and clients switch to Signal or FaceTime for sensitive conversations. Still, for the majority of people, they don’t think it’s absolutely necessary to get over the firewall for daily communications,” said Zhang Qingfang, a Beijing-based human-rights lawyer.

China targets Alibaba with anti-monopoly investigation

Chinese regulators have launched an anti-monopoly investigation into Alibaba and the state market supervision administration on December 24 2020 said it had filed an investigation into Alibaba Group Holdings Ltd over “suspected monopolistic practices”.

The People’s Bank of China, China Banking Regulatory Commission, China Securities Regulatory Commission and State Administration of Foreign Exchange said they would also meet Ant Group founded by Jack Ma for “supervisory and guidance” talks.

Shares in e-commerce company plummet, with financial spinoff Ant Group also called in for ‘supervisory’ talks with authorities

Beijing curbs increasing power of tech giants, Alibaba and TenCent.

In November 2020, Ant Group’s world largest IPO was halted by Chinese authorities 48 hours before trading would have begun in Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Japanese Netizens' Different Reception of Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the PRC

During the opening ceremony of 2020 Tokyo Olympics on July 23, 2021, the national team of Taiwan was arranged to march in the stadium in an order that follows the alphabetical sequence of "Ta". It means the organizer identifies Taiwan in the name of "Taiwan", instead of the name "Chinese Taipei", imposed by the People's Republic of China (#PRC).

Although the official announcement was still made according to the denomination "Chinese Taipei", the host of the Japanese national TV channnel #NHK used the name "Taiwan".

Moreover, on the platform Niconico where many Japanese netizens streamed the ceremony, enthusiatic reactions appeared with entrancd of Team Taiwan and Team Hong Kong.

Many netizens typed in phrases like "Taiwan Taiwan", "An Independent Country", "Fight on, Taiwan", "Love Taiwan" when seeing Tean Taiwan marched in. Netizens also cheered for the Team Hong Kong: "Fight on Hong Kong", "Hongkongers Persist" and "Fight for freedom"

This contrasts with the reactions the Japanese netizens had towards the PRC team. The netizens critique China's human rights violations and political prosecutions in the past and present. Words like "Tiananmen", "Covid", "massacre" popped up.

It was also reported that China's #Tencent suspended the live streaming after the said NHK host called out "Taiwan". In the end, the Chinese streaming platform failed to show the entrance of Team PRC due to its censorship of the official Japanese host.

Chinese media’s social mania maddens markets

It’s possible to read too much into Chinese state media jeremiads. Recent articles warning of social ills caused by high liquor prices, video-game addiction and e-cigarettes, to name a few, have wiped billions off index heavyweights like Tencent (0700.HK). Yet government columnists are unreliable policy prophets.

Traders are jumpy after Beijing announced in late July it would convert online tutoring companies, many listed in New York, to non-profit status. After law professor Henry Gao pointed out on Twitter that President Xi Jinping had called for something like this in 2018, Wall Street leaped to review Xi’s speeches to see what other industries he has it in for.

No Chinese Stock Left Among Global Top 10 as #Tencent Slides

//Tencent Holdings Ltd. has lost its place among the world’s 10 largest companies by market value, leaving no Chinese company in the list as Bejing’s regulatory crackdown continues to wreak havoc on the stock market.

Hong Kong-listed shares of the gaming and social media company fell 0.5% Thursday, valuing it at $556 billion. That’s just below U.S. chipmaker Nvidia Corp., data compiled by Bloomberg shows.

This is the first time that a Chinese company isn’t among the world’s ten largest since 2017, the data show. Tencent’s unseating follows that of #Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. earlier this year, as China’s tech behemoths face tougher rules on everything from monopolistic practices to data security and kids’ gaming hours.//
