US Senators Push Bill to Counter CCP’s Military Threat to Taiwan as House Representatives Call for Ending ‘One China’ Policy
As the situation becomes increasingly tense in the Taiwan Strait, a number of US senators called on the administration to help Taiwan fend off China on 17 September’s Foreign Affairs Committee hearing. A number of senators and House representatives has made similar calls for the US to take actions and asked that the ‘One China’ policy be ended. As senator Rick Scott proposed the Taiwan Invasion Prevention Act, House representative Tom Tiffany proposed that America resume diplomatic relations with Taiwan and open negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement.
In a tweet, Scott, senator for Florida, said, “For months, I’ve called on Communist China to...live up to its commitment to respect Hong Kong’s autonomy and end its efforts to crack down on Taiwan.” He described the Taiwan Invasion Prevention Act as demonstrating America’s commitment to democracy and freedom as well as Taiwan. The act deals with strengthening America’s Taiwan policy and increasing Taiwan’s ability to resist China. It also provides for limited authorization for the president to use force to protect Taiwan from military attack under specific circumstances. Additionally, it provides for a platform that facilitates military exercises involving the US and Taiwan and requires planning for coordinated military actions in case Taiwan is attacked. It further urges the US trade representative to enter into negotiations with Taiwan on a bilateral trade agreement, and to welcome the Taiwanese president to address a joint session of the US congress.

US Representative Puts Forward Resolution to End ‘One China’ Policy, Establish Formal Diplomatic Relations Between America and Taiwan
US Republican representative Tom Tiffany has introduced a concurrent resolution calling for the resumption of formal diplomatic relations between America and Taiwan and ending the ‘one China’ policy.
Introduced on 16 September, the resolution will, if passed, serve as the congress’ call for the US to resume formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, negotiate and sign free trade agreements, and endorse Taiwan’s membership in international organizations. It will also call on the president to move away from the outdated ‘one China’ policy and recognize Taiwan as an independent state, and to endorse Taiwan’s membership in the UN and other international organizations of which the US is a member. A concurrent resolution is a legislation expressing the sentiment of the US congress. Requiring only the approval of both the house and the senate and not the president’s signature, it is not legally binding.
“Now is the time for America to stop parroting Beijing’s ‘One China’ fantasy, and for US policy to reflect the reality that Taiwan is a free, democratic and independent country,” Tiffany stressed, noting that the US does not need the CCP’s permission to engage in dialogue with its friends around the world.
Tiffany said the US and Taiwan had maintained normal diplomatic relations until 1979, when the then-president Jimmy Carter abruptly cut ties with Taiwan and recognized the communist Chinese regime without the congress’ consent. Despite the Taiwan Relations Act, which the congress later passed to authorize US arms sales to Taiwan, and the ‘six assurances’ made by the late president Ronald Reagan, the absence of formal diplomatic relations between the US and Taiwan is tantamount to treating the democratically elected government of Taiwan the same way it treats the brutal regimes in North Korea and Iran.

The US Say No Position on Taiwan Sovereignty, but “One-China Policy” is Distinct from “One-China Principle”
In response to press inquiries, the US Department of State spokesperson further elaborates US's stance on Taiwan policy. He pointed out that the US has long followed a “One-China Policy” which is distinct from Beijing's “One-China Principle”. The spokesperson said the China Communist Party (CCP) asserts sovereignty over Taiwan under the “One-China Principle”, but the US takes no position on sovereignty over Taiwan.
The spokesperson added, "the fundamental U.S. interest is that the Taiwan question be resolved peacefully, without coercion, and in a manner acceptable to the people on both sides of the Strait". In his reply, he emphasize the U.S.' One China policy remains guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the three Joint Communiques between the U.S. and China, and the Six Assurances to Taiwan by Ronald Reagan, as it has been in the past four decades.
The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in an interview with Hugh Hewitt Show that the US has prescribed that Taiwan has not been part of China, and that was recognized since the Reagan administration, adhered to now for three and a half decades, and done so under both Democratic and the Republican administrations, in fact, a bipartian consensus. Since Pompeo's speech was questioned as a violation of the “one China principle,” it reportedly triggered strong discontent among hardliners in Beijing.

HK Authorities Force Taiwan's representatives in Hong Kong to sign “One China Commitment”
The Mainland Affairs Council (#MAC) of Taiwan pointed out that Hong Kong Government requested the Taiwanese staff of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office to sign the “One China Commitment”.
The Taiwanese staff refused, so their visas could not be renewed. 7 staff members had to leave Hong Kong and returned to Taiwan on Jun 20, 2021.
The President of MAC in Taiwan Chiu Tai-san criticized that the “One China Commitment” was a political barrier set up by Hong Kong Government, and it violates the Taiwan-HK agreement made in 2011 “with the aim to belittle the National status of my country, and forced the staff members to bow their heads to the Beijing authorities”.
Taiwan insists on rejecting it. Chiu also stated that #CCP is undoubtedly the “shadow fighter” behind all these operations, by attempting to take advantage of the Taiwan office in Hong Kong as a tool for political conspiracy against Taiwan. Once again, it proves Hong Kong’s “One Country Two Systems” becomes only an empty title.
As a consequent, countries that have signed contracts and negotiated with Hong Kong government "shall put a question mark on the autonomy and integrity of this authority”.
