Japanese Government Gives Money to Corporations to Move Production Lines out of China. First Batch of 87 Corporations Receive 70 Billion Yen Worth of Subsidy

The Japanese government will launch a subsidy scheme to encourage Japanese manufacturers to move their Chinese production lines back to Japan, in a bid to ensure the stability of its supply chains and reduce reliance on China.

Bloomberg reported that last Friday (17th July), Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced the first batch of 57 corporations to receive subsidy for moving their factories back to Japan. Among them are face mask manufacturer Iris Ohyama Inc., also known as Iris China in Mainland China, as well as electronic products corporation Sharp Corp. This batch of corporations will receive a subsidy totalling 57.4 billion yen (USD$536 million).

Under government subsidy, Iris Ohyama Inc. plans to produce its face masks in its headquarters’ Kakuda Factory in the Miyagi Prefecture in Northern Japan. It will source all raw materials locally and will not rely on any overseas suppliers.

The METI also announced that 30 corporations, including optical equipment manufacturer Hoya, will receive government subsidy to move their production lines from China to Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries. The exact amount of the subsidy was not disclosed.

U.S. charges four Chinese nationals charged in global hacking campaign

Four Chinese nationals have been charged in a global hacking campaign aimed at dozens of companies, universities and government agencies in the United States and abroad, the U.S. Justice Department said on Monday.

The charges were announced as the United States and a coalition of allies on Monday accused China's Ministry of State Security of a global cyber hacking campaign, specifically attributing a large Microsoft attack disclosed earlier this year to hackers working on Beijing's behalf.

The hacking was sponsored by the Ministry of State Security and focused on information that would significantly benefit Chinese companies and businesses, including research and development processes, according to the indictment cited by the Justice Department.

France, South Pacific nations to combat 'predatory' fishing as China extends reach

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday France and South Pacific nations would launch a South Pacific coastguard network to counter "predatory" behaviour, which an adviser said was aimed at illegal fishing, as China expands its maritime reach.

The United States and allies including France, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, are actively expanding their activity in the Pacific to counter China's influence.

Though tiny in land mass, Pacific islands control vast swaths of resource-rich ocean called Exclusive Economic Zones, forming a formidable boundary between the Americas and Asia.
