China’s Mars rover rolls off landing platform, joining US robots patrolling Red Planet

The rover Zhurong, which successfully landed on Mars last week, departed its landing module and rolled onto the surface of the planet. China is the second nation after the US to achieve this.

The start of the new phase of the Tianwen-1 mission was reported on Saturday by the China National Space Administration (CNSA). The telemetry data indicates that the Zhurong rover’s wheels touched Martian soil at 10:40am Beijing Time (2:40am GMT), the space agency said.

Extreme weather kills 21 in Gansu mountain race

Twenty-one people were killed when extremely cold weather struck during an ultramarathon on Saturday in rugged Gansu province in northwestern China, state media reported on Sunday, sparking public outrage over the lack of contingency planning. The 100-km (62-mile) race began from a lush tourist site at a bend in the Yellow River, China's second-longest. The route would take runners through deep canyons and undulating hills on an arid plateau at an elevation of more than 1,000 metres (3,300 feet). The race kicked off on Saturday morning with runners clad in t-shirts and shorts under overcast skies, according to photographs posted on the social media account of the Yellow River Stone Forest scenic area in Jingtai, a county under the jurisdiction of Baiyin city.Around noon on Saturday, a mountainous section of the race was hit by hail, freezing rain and gales that caused temperatures to plummet, officials from Baiyin told a news briefing on Sunday.A massive rescue effort was initiated, with over 1,200 rescuers dispatched, assisted by thermal-imaging drones, radar detectors and demolition equipment, according to Xinhua.A landslide following the severe weather also hampered the rescue work, said officials from Baiyin, about 1,000 km (620 miles) west of the Chinese capital Beijing.A total of 172 people took part in the race. By Sunday, 151 participants had been confirmed safe, while a last missing runner was found dead at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, state media reported.Jingtai county saw a low of 6 degrees Celsius (43 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday excluding wind chill.Baiyin - including Jingtai - was expected to see moderate to strong winds from Friday night through Saturday, according to the China Meteorological Administration in Beijing in a report late on Friday.A separate report on the website of provincial weather services on Thursday also predicted a "significant" drop in temperature in most parts of Gansu - including Baiyin - through Sunday. The deaths sparked public outrage on Chinese social media, with anger mainly directed at the Baiyin government and unhappiness over the lack of contingency planning."Why didn't the government read the weather forecast and do a risk assessment?" one commentator wrote."This is totally a man-made calamity. Even if the weather is unexpected, where were the contingency plans?"At the news briefing on Sunday, Baiyin officials bowed and apologised, saying they were saddened by the tragic deaths of the runners and that they were to be blamed. The Gansu provincial government has set up an investigation team to further look into the cause of the deaths, the People's Daily reported. Chinese buying up land around military bases in Japan: Report

Japan has unearthed at least 700 Chinese-funded instances of plots of land changing hands near military bases, in a government investigation prompted by security concerns, a newspaper reports.

The investments and purchase plans were driven by Chinese-led foreign corporations and could pose a risk to Japan’s safety, the Sankei Shimbun reported Thursday.

Brinken: Asserting domestic jurisdiction doesn't grant the right to enslave, torture, disappear, and ethnically cleanse people

The United Nations Security Council held a video conference on Friday (7May). The US Secretary of State Antony Brinken said at the meeting, that asserting domestic jurisdiction doesn't grant any state the right to enslave, torture, disappear, and ethnically cleanse their people. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi accused countries of defining international rules as a “patent or privilege of the few.”

China chaired the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for May and held this meeting on Friday to discuss multilateralism. The meeting was held online, on the theme of multilateral cooperation against the pandemic, global warming and other common threats.

Brinken stressed the need for countries to uphold international commitments, focus on human rights and respect for the principle of sovereign equality. “When U.N. member states – particularly permanent members of the Security Council – flout these rules and block attempts to hold accountable those who violate international law, it sends the message that others can break those rules with impunity,” he said, “Asserting domestic jurisdiction doesn't give any state a blank check to enslave, torture, disappear, ethnically cleanse their people, or violate their human rights in any other way.”

China to try Australian writer on espionage charges

Australia said its citizen Yang Hengjun will be tried by a Chinese court on espionage charges on Thursday amid deteriorating relations between the countries. Yang has been held since arriving in China in January 2019 and has had no access to family and only limited contact with his legal representation, according to Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne. “Despite repeated requests by Australian officials, Chinese authorities have not provided any explanation or evidence for the charges facing Dr Yang,” she said in a statement. As relations with China have nose-dived, Beijing has blocked Australian exports including beef, wine, coal, lobsters, wood and barley. However, Australia’s most lucrative export, iron ore, still has eager buyers among Chinese steel manufacturers. Payne said Australian officials had been requested access to Yang in what has so far been a “closed and opaque process." “As a basic standard of justice, access to the trial for observers should be a bare minimum to conform with international norms of transparency," she said. A close family friend, Feng Chongyi, described the case against Yang as “fabricated ... for political persecution and political purposes and I have never had any illusion for a fair trial." “Given Beijing’s determination to punish him and the current bad relations between Australia and China, I am deeply concerned that Yang’s sentence will be harsh," Feng said. Taiwan considers extending Covid alert

Taiwan is considering extending its second highest Covid-19 alert that was due to expire at the end of the week, the health minister said on Monday, as he reported a further increase in domestic cases despite tighter social restrictions. However, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung also said an infection peak was registered last Monday and should continue to decline. "Judging from the trend of confirmed cases, it seems that the peak has reached a certain point," Chen said. Taiwan has been battling a rise in infections after months of relative safety, shocking a population used to living with few restrictions, though the total case numbers remain low compared to some other parts of the world. Chen announced another 590 new domestic Covid-19 cases, including 256 cases added to the totals for days over the past week or so as it continues to readjust its infection numbers following delays in reporting positive tests. Chen said he hoped changes to the testing and reporting system would soon start to take effect so going forward there would be no need to adjust case tallies. The government is also working to set up more test stations in "hot spots" across the island and has asked manufacturers to speed up the production of Covid-19 test kits. Taiwan has reported 4,917 cases since the pandemic began, including 29 deaths. Most of those infected in the current wave either have no or light symptoms. Northern Taiwan has been most badly affected, but cases have been reported across the island. (Reuters)
