This was the first demonstration of the intellectual community since the establishment of Communist China in 1949, which not only inspired the students but also shook the citizens. The march of intellectuals was unusual, as one of the young writers who participated in the march said: "We proved by our actions today that Chinese intellectuals are not all cartilaginous patients with calcium deficiency."(In other words, turning a blind eye to the evil deeds of the authority.)

People from Beijing's governmental institutions, academia, journalism, arts, medical, and corporate systems spontaneously came to Tiananmen Square in solidarity with the students, totaling more than 300,000 people. Their banners read: "Government: How long are you going to let students starve? ", "The children are not at fault", and "Delaying a sincere dialogue is crippling the students".
全国各地都开始罢课、游行，支持北京学生
