Citizens Gather for Vigil Despite No Approval

19:19 | #VictoriaPark

Today is the 31st anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, which happened on the 4th of June 1989. It has been estimated that thousands of lives were lost after the People's Liberation Army, under the command of the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party, opened fire and rolled armoured vehicles and tanks into the square.

Despite today's vigil being one that has not been approved by the police force, people still gathered, just like what they would do on this day, every single year since '89.

Citizens also took the initiative to keep a safe distance away from each other to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Students Among Crowd Gathered for Vigil

20:33 | #VictoriaPark, #CWB

Among the throngs of people who streamed into Victoria Park for the vigil, a number of students still dressed in school uniform were seen. It is a very heartening image, as it brings an assurance to us that the next generation will carry this this flame from our generation.

Meanwhile, flags were seen being waved at the vigil and well, one of it bearing the famous slogan by localist Edward Leung, "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times".

Reporters barred from entering metro station to cover police operation

20:51 |#Central
Waving their batons and pepper guns, a team of riot police charged towards protesters walking down the metro station. While reporters wanted to follow the officers, they were barred outside the metro station, apparently deprived of their rights to report the happenings inside the station.

Editor's Note: An uncanny comparison could be drawn between today's operation and the operation on 31 August in Prince Edward Station.

Police stopped reporters from covering their operation targeting black-clad protesters

20:56 | #Central

Instead of respecting press freedom and letting reporters into the metro station to cover police operation, police officers chose to “report” the operation in their own words through microphones, repeatedly emphasizing that it is just “another routine operation”.

Peeping through officers standing at the entrance of metro station, it was seen that the stop-and-search operation was targeting young, black-clad protesters.

Police Mocks "Black Lives Matter" Movement and Harasses Reporter

20:24 | #YauMaTei
A busker was surrounded by a group of riot police and had his ID taken down by them. The same group of riot police officers then proceeded on disperse the bystanders at the scene. The busker was later escorted to safety by a journalist and left after the scene after getting searched by the police.

While all these were happening, a police officer suddenly started to harass one of our reporters, repeatedly chanting in front of the camera “Black Lives Matter” and “I Can’t Breathe” in an attempt to mock the protests going on in the US. These slogans stemmed anti-racism campaigns in the US.

Shortly after, the same police officer queried our reporter in Mandarin, about where she was from and commented that the Hong Kong Police Force was way better than the law enforcement in the country of our reporter.
