India joins Olympic Diplomatic Boycott after China features PLA Regiment Commander in torch relay


On February 3, 2022, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, has clearly mentioned that it’s regrettable that China has decided to politicise the Winter Olympics, which would be held from February 4, 2022 until February 20, 2022 in Beijing. He informed that the Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of India in Beijing wouldn’t be attending the opening or the closing ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. This was after a move by China of making People’s Liberation Army or PLA Regiment Commander, Qi Fabao, the torchbearer as a Hero via propaganda, who himself was involved in the Galway Valley clash in June 2020 in India between Indian and Chinese armies, in which, 20 Indian soldiers were killed, and more than 38 PLA soldiers were drowned in sub-zero river, while having suffered a head injury, including other severe injuries. This was a nice step, after having initially supported Winter Olympics Diplomatic Attendance by India due to Russia’s support for China’s Winter Olympics.

Post the MEA Spokesperson’s message, Prasar Bharti CEO, Shashi Shekhar Vempati tweeted that Doordarshan Sports (DD Sports) channel would also not telecast opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics being held in Beijing. It’s also been clear that only 1 Indian athlete, Arif Khan, is participating in the Winter Olympics in the Skiing event.

These decisions came into existence, post a top United States Lawmaker, Jim Risch, a United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member, had condemned China’s shameful step to make a PLA Regiment Commander, a torchbearer at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, who himself was engaged in a skirmish in Galwan Valley in June 2020, and also involved in genocide against the Uyghurs with his Xinjiang military command. By stating the above mentioned, the United States would take a firm stand on supporting Uyghurs freedoms and the sovereignty of India.

Several countries had announced a Diplomatic Boycott of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, with respect to China’s Human Rights Violations, while backing their own teams’ participation in the so called Genocide Games. The United States was first to begin the boycott, followed by Japan, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Estonia, Latvia, Sweden, The Netherlands and Denmark.
