Hong Kong activist Tony Chung, who served time in jail for a national security offense, has fled to the UK seeking political asylum. After completing his jail term, Chung announced his departure on social media, stating that he was unable to return to Hong Kong. He managed to travel to Japan and then flew to the UK. Chung, the former convener of pro-independence group Studentlocalism, was arrested in 2020 under the national security law. He pleaded guilty to inciting secession and money laundering and was sentenced to three years and seven months in jail. Chung's departure follows the trend of pro-democracy figures leaving Hong Kong due to the national security law.

Concerns arise as national security police in Hong Kong regularly meet and question activists, raising issues of intimidation, surveillance, privacy invasion, lack of transparency, financial exploitation, manipulation, and impact on mental well-being.
