Hong Kong Protest anthem "Glory to Hong Kong" dominated all top 10 spots of iTunes as HK Gov't seeked to ban the song on Tuesday.

The Department of Justice seeks to ban the song from broadcasting, performing, printing, publishing, displaying or reproducing. If it is banned, it will be the 1st song that is banned in Hong Kong. However, many questions how it will be executed. All variation of "Glory to Hong Kong" are uploaded oversea, where HKGov has no jurisdiction. The song will only be banned unless internet providers, such as Google, compromised.

However, many worried that this may be the 1st step for Hong Kong to build a firewall similar to the one mainland China has. This would significantly deteriorate freedom which is already much worsen since 2019.

Hong Kong: Tech Firms Should Oppose Protest Song Ban

Tech companies should oppose the Hong Kong government’s application for an injunction to ban broadcasting and distribution of the 2019 protest song, “Glory to Hong Kong,” Human Rights Watch said today.

In a June 20, 2023 letter, more than 24 human rights and digital rights groups urged companies including Apple, Google, Meta, Twitter, and Spotify to oppose a potential injunction by the High Court of Hong Kong to protect the right to freedom of expression and access to information in Hong Kong and around the world. The injunction, if ordered by the court, would require that companies remove the song from their respective platforms, effectively banning it online.

After the court rejected to ban the song “Glory to Hong Kong”, DOJ told the judge to follow the Chief Executive’s order. Maybe Hong Kong should consider not having a court at all.
