The first two women predators are both from Asia. One is Carrie Lam, who heads a government that was still democratic when she took over. The chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region since 2017, Lam has proved to be the puppet of Chinese President Xi Jinping, and now openly supports his predatory policies towards the media. They led to the closure of Hong Kong’s leading independent newspaper, Apple Daily, on 24 June and the jailing of its founder, Jimmy Lai, a 2020 RSF Press Freedom laureate.

#AppleDaily has been murdered for several months. The gap it left in #HongKong has been deeply felt. How was it like working for such a controversial media? How is like for their former staff now? Watch this #NHK documentary to find out.

Hundreds of Hongkongers in UK protest against clampdown of press freedom in Hong Kong

On January 8 and January 9, 2022 Hongkongers in the United Kingdom assembled in 7 cities to protest against Hong Kong authorities' crackdown on press freedom.

Clad in black, many Hongkongers were seen holding homemade handbills and banners calling for international community's attention over the deterioration of freedom in Hong Kong.

Holding hands and singing the protest song, "Glory to Hong Kong", long human chains were seen in Newcastle, Birmingham, Kingston, Liverpool, Manchester, Edinburgh and Aberdeen to show solidarity and support for journalists arrested by national security police in Hong Kong.

Dec 18: Founder of Apple Daily, Jimmy Lai, along with three Apple companies, is being tried in the High Court for charges of conspiring with foreign forces and conspiracy to publish seditious publications. The case raises concerns about how the national security law threatens human rights in Hong Kong. Notably, Lai has already spent over 3 years in jail before the trial, highlighting the government's practice of punishing political prisoners even before their day in court. The trial continues tomorrow. #JimmyLai #AppleDaily #PressFreedom #HumanRights #NationalSecurityLaw #HighCourt
