UK Government considering proposals to expand #BNO scheme for Hong Kong youngsters born after 1997

On February 10, the UK parliament continued to debate proposed law amendments that would widen the pathway for people with British national (overseas) (BNO) status to resettle in the UK.

The amendment aimed to expand the BNO visa scheme to those aged between 18 and 25 who were born on or after 1997 who have BNO parents to access the scheme independently of their parents.

Speaking in a Committee Stage debate at the House of Lords, the last governor, Chris Patten bluntly criticised the Chief Executives of Hong Kong and members of HK Police Force.

“Everyone of my successors as Chief Executive of Hong Kong had a British passport. ... [the] unhappy paradox is the people at the moment, the quisling, including the member in the police force, [who are] doing the prosecuting, have British passport. And the ones being prosecuted, or the ones being locked up, don't," Lord Patten said.

He continued: "... what is happening in Hong Kong - the destruction of a free city, one of the great free cities in the world - I think that's wrong and we should say it's wrong"

The debate, led by Lord of Alton of Liverpool, saw the amendment receive support from all sides of the House of Commons including with support from Lord Patten of Barnes, the last Governor of Hong Kong as well as the Liberal Democrat and Labour frontbench.

Lord Sharpe of Epsom, the Government Whip in the Lords, said, "We are looking seriously at whether more can be done to support this cohort. I hope this will cheer your Lordships up that we hope to update the House by Report stage."

Hong Kong University forces boarding students to leave dormitories and stops them from protesting

Claiming pandemic-control, at least five tertiary institutions in Hong Kong told dormitory residents to return home.

On February 10, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) told occupants of its student residences to leave in two days’ time by February 12 – 13.

Polytechnic University (#PolyU), Baptist University and City University (#CityU) said they also had plans to “encourage” residents to leave.

The university’s decision has caught many students in surprises, putting them through unnecessary disturbances and therefore, elicited resentment.

In just a few hours after #CUHK’s announcement, over 500 students of the university joined a discussion group on social media, calling to protest the school’s arrangement.

Although these students reiterated that their actions would remain peaceful and they would only attempt to hand in petition letter to the university, the university reacted fervently with tens of uniformed security officers stationed visible at where the students gathered.

The security guards were seen pointing video cameras at protesting students and shouting through loudspeakers for students to leave the site or they might risk violating the COVID-19 gathering restrictions.

57% Hongkongers tend to "live with COVID" as "zero-COVID" is unreachable

The Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI), a research institution in Hong Kong, conducted a survey by asking 7,000 Hong Kong citizens to evaluate the existing COVID19 measures.

57% of the respondents believe that "living with the virus" is more realistic than having zero COVID19 cases. Almost 90% of the pro-democratic citizens shared this view.

Among the non-democratic supporters, 40% supported the view of "living with the virus" and while another 40% looked for a "zero case" scenario.

The supporters and the opponents to the implementation of population-wide compulsory testing are divided into 41% in respective fraction; however, the opposition to other COVID-19 measures was more than half.

55% of the respondents oppose "3-dose vaccination". 53% of them disagree to shut down more venues. At last, 54% of them do not want gathering regulation to be tightened.

The survey reveals that the people opt for "living with the virus" as having "zero COVID cases" is almost impossible due to the continuous mutation,

The spokeperson of the institute Dr Chung Kim-Wah pointed out that there is a gap between "believing that the policy is helpful" and "supporting the policy". This reflects the tendency of Hong Kong people to take risks in order to return to their normal life.

Australian intelligence uncovers and blocks Chinese funding of election candidate through businessman

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (#ABC) reported on Friday (11th February) that the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) had discovered the close ties between an Australian businessman and China, funding a pro-Beijing Labor Party candidate in this year's federal election.

The report cited an Australian security source that China's intelligence service was working through an Australian businessman to fund members of the Australian largest opposition party, the Labor Party, for the New South Wales constituency in the May parliamentary election. China promised to increase China's influence in the Australian parliament if elected.

But the plan was seen and blocked by Australia's official security intelligence organization.

Winter Olympic Athletes Were Surprisingly Reluctant to Speak

German luger Natalie Geisenberger, who was critical of China, when asked about her view on China's human rights issues a day after earning a gold medal, said peaking out was a matter of timing. "You have to be careful when you say what and where you say it", she said.

To her self-censorship, some netizens said it is unbearable

What China is trying to show the world through this Olympics? Alain Frachon, a French columnist for Le Monde, believes that "President Xi Jinping's China has proven that it is imposing its standards of civil liberties - on Chinese nationals and foreigners. In the ideological battle, the West is not on the podium."

Advertisers and multinational enterprises have been warned that no representatives of theirs can publicly speak out on Xinjiang or Hong Kong's human rights issues, not even in a few words tweets, or they will face heavy retaliation.

#EnesKanterFreedom is a #US basketball player who dares to criticise the #CCP on public platforms on Hong Kong, Taiwan and Xinjiang issues.

He recently published a post on #Twitter that China cannot affect the US externally but internally. He uses #NBA as an example -- he was a basketball player being sold to #HoustonRockets, then soon be a free agent. The whole process is only 10 minutes.

During the #AntiELAB movement in Hong Kong in 2019, the then-Houston Rockets manager once confessed before the CCP government due to showing support to HKers.
