Voter registration ended on May 2

The 2020 voter registration period ended on May 2, and the change of voter registration information has ended on the 2 April. In the past months, the 'yellow' pro-democracy camp and 'blue' pro-establishment camp had been mobilizing new voters to register.

The Civilian Volunteer Team was informed that there are currently over a thousand registrations in the catering industry had been bounced back and required re-submission of information. Many of the letters requesting replacement certificates did not specify the requirements and the format was irregular. In addition, the government arrangement for civil servants to work from home has worried voters that this may hinder the ability of 'yellow' pro-protesr shops to successfully register as a constituent voter.

Pro-democracy legislator Dennis Kwok, vice-chairperson of the House Committee, announces:

1) He has the right to chair the House Committee meetings. Starry Lee's chairing of the meeting as the "former chairperson" and a candidate for the role of "chairperson" is illegal and violates the house rules of the Legislative Council.

2) Denounces pro-Beijing legislator Aron Kwok's physical assault on pro-democracy legislator Ray Chan by dragging him across the chamber.

3) He has instructed security to expel Starry Lee from the chamber, but security did not follow his instructions, and instead only followed Lee's orders.

4) The expelled pro-democracy legislators can now re-enter the chamber.

Man Accused of Possessing Poison Has Prosecution Withdrawn, Jeremy Tam Censures Police Arbitrary Arrests

After protestors occupied the Legislative Council building on July 1 last year, police officers intercepted multiple vans near Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park, and arrested a van driver for "Possession of Part I Poison" and "Possession of Instrument Fit for Unlawful Purpose".

Legislative Councillor Jeremy Tam Man-ho, who assisted the arrested driver, said that the driver was only found with asthma medication, stating that he "would have believed that this was some Golden Triangle drug smuggling case if one was not informed about it".

After he was notified that the driver had his prosecution withdrawn due to lack of evidence, Tam censured the police for conducting indiscriminate and arbitrary arrests, stating that the police "often frame Hongkongers", and noted the irony of the officers from the Regional Anti-Triad Unit, whose possession of methamphetamine made headlines in early May. He remarked, "The true drug smugglers may be the Regional Anti-Triad Unit who claims to be 'Serving Hong Kong with Honour, Duty and Loyalty'".

The controversial National Anthem Bill will receive its second reading later this month, as filibustering in the LegCo House Committee was put to an end

#LegCo #NationalAnthemBill
From #NathanLaw's Facebook:

On 1 July 2019, protestors went inside the #LegCo and unfurled the banner reading “There is no rioter, only tyranny”. They declared a manifesto and reiterated the 5 demands.

Today, Andrew Leung disqualified Dennis Kwok; Chan Kin-Bor removed most pro-democracy lawmakers; Starry Lee was elected as the House Committee chairperson with 40:0 votes.

To quote from the #July1 manifesto: “The society might criticise us. Yet, who is behind the social divide? Who causes public discontent? What did Hong Kong do? Why are Hongkongers persecuted like this?"

Violence comes from tyranny. Under the CCP's oppression, Hongkongers resist, fight for their future and take back their legislature. The LegCo on July 1 represented the people.

After that day, the LegCo spent millions to redo the chamber, costing Hong Kong’s future. I'd rather have a LegCo filled with graffiti and manifesto, instead of glamour but evil deeds. Structural violence is way more destructive than the so-called street violence.

Leung Kwan-yin denied Wu Chi-wai’s oral questions about the National Security Law

The NPC voted for the implementation of the National Security Law in Hong Kong last week. Democratic Party lawmaker Wu Chi-wai applied for questions on the LegCo meeting on Jun 3 concerning the protection of Hongkongers' rights and freedoms after its implementation.

Leung Kwan-yin replied to Wu that the implementation of the law was the responsibility of the central government, thus, the question was denied for not relevant to Hong Kong internal affairs.

Wu criticised Leung for having an unreasonable judgement. He suspected that Leung worked to comply with the Hong Kong government and silence the people. He accused the Leung for lying to Hong Kong people.

Meanwhile, at least 5 incumbent lawmakers including Fernando Cheung, Kwok Wing-kin and Democratic Party's Wu Chi-wai, Wan Siu-kin and Wong Bik-wan were also arrested, reportedly for contempt and obstructing the duty of #LegCo staff

According to the administraor of Chu's facebook page, the arrest was reportedly connected to a Legislative Council meeting that involved Beijing loyalist Starry Lee on May 8, 2020.

[Editor's note: Chan and Chu were elected lawmakers. They refused to carry out the "extended" term according to the Chinese Communist Party's decision, after the Hong Kong government cancelled the Legislative Election which was originally scheduled on Sept 6, 2020.]
