In China’s Crackdown on Muslims, Children Have Not Been Spared

As many as a million ethnic Uighurs, Kazakhs and others have been sent to internment camps and prisons in Xinjiang over the past three years, an indiscriminate clampdown aimed at weakening the population’s devotion to Islam. Even as these mass detentions have provoked global outrage, though, the Chinese government is pressing ahead with a parallel effort targeting the region’s children.

Nearly a half million children have been separated from their families and placed in boarding schools so far, according to a planning document published on a government website, and the ruling Communist Party has set a goal of operating one to two such schools in each of Xinjiang’s 800-plus townships by the end of next year.

19-year-old Hong Kong Protester in Exile Accused the Police of Planting of False Evidence

The “Days and Nights of HK Protesters, Turn Grieve into Action, Fight for Our Freedom Assembly” was held on December 29 at Edinburgh Place, Central with more than a thousand turning up to support.

During the assembly, there were also recordings of those in exile encouraging HongKongers to keep on fighting. The recording was played in front of a banner that read “planting of false evidence is strictly forbidden”.

A 19-year-old protester was brutally beaten and arrested on 11 August and he described the event as “pure luck (for him) to stay alive”. He did not go down to the details of cases regarding the planting of false evidence, but he witnessed many protesters being assaulted by the police. He was stepped on by the police on his head, kicked in eyes, had his hands tied behind his back and brought to the Sun Uk Ling Holding Centre. He further described that the least injury a protester would get at the Holding Centre was to have “blood cover the entire face”. He was also diagnosed with minor cerebral hemorrhage due the injuries that he sustained from the assault by the police.
