China Detains #Bloomberg Staff in Beijing on suspicion of endangering national security

Chinese authorities have detained a member of staff, Haze Fan from Bloomberg's news bureau in Beijing on suspicion of endangering national security, the company said on December 11, 2020.

Fan was last in contact with one of her editors around 11:30 a.m. local time on December 7. Shortly after, she was seen being escorted from her apartment building by plain clothes security officials.

“We are very concerned for her, and have been actively speaking to Chinese authorities to better understand the situation," a Bloomberg spokesperson said. "We are continuing to do everything we can to support her while we seek more information.”

In its report on the arrest, Bloomberg quoted mainland authorities as saying: "Chinese citizen Ms Fan has been detained by the Beijing National Security Bureau according to relevant Chinese law on suspicion of engaging in criminal activities that jeopardise national security."

According to Ms. Fan’s LinkedIn profile, she is currently a global business reporter and senior producer for Bloomberg in China. In her capacity as a producer, the profile says, she is responsible for breaking market news and planning other content for Bloomberg TV.

EU Calls on China to Allow Bloomberg News Staffer Legal Access

The European Union has urged China to release all journalists and citizens held in connection with their reporting, following the detention of a Bloomberg News employee. Haze Fan, a Chinese citizen, was taken from her home by plain-clothes security officials on December 7 on suspicion of endangering national security.

"All those arrested and detained in connection with their reporting activity should be immediately released,” an EU spokesperson said in a statement on December 12. “We expect the Chinese authorities to grant her (Fan) medical assistance if needed, prompt access to a lawyer of her choice, and contacts with her family,” it added.
