Blinken starts Beijing talks with Qin Gang meeting

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken began meetings in Beijing on Sunday, amid frosty bilateral ties and dim prospects for any breakthrough on the long list of disputes between the world’s two largest economies.Blinken is the highest-ranking US government official to visit China since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021.Foreign Minister Qin Gang greeted Blinken and his group at the door to a villa in the grounds of the Diaoyutai State Guest House, as the two made small talk in English before shaking hands in front of a Chinese and an American flag.After heading into a meeting room, neither Blinken nor Qin made comments in front of reporters who were briefly allowed in.During his stay through Monday, Blinken is also expected to meet with China's top diplomat Wang Yi and possibly President Xi Jinping, seeking to establish open and durable communication channels to ensure the strategic rivalry between the two countries does not spiral into conflict.There is an expectation Blinken's visit will pave the way for more bilateral meetings in coming months, including possible trips by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. It could also set the stage for talks between Xi and Biden at multilateral summits later in the year.Biden said on Saturday he hopes to meet with President Xi in the next several months.A November meeting of the two leaders on the Indonesian island of Bali briefly eased fears of a new Cold War, but following the flight of an alleged Chinese spy balloon over the United States in February, high-level communication has been rare.The rest of the world will closely follow Blinken's trip as any escalation between the superpowers could have worldwide repercussions on everything from financial markets to trade routes and practices and global supply chains."There's a recognition on both sides that we do need to have senior-level channels of communication," a senior US State Department official told reporters during a refuelling stop in Tokyo en route to Beijing."That we are at an important point in the relationship where I think reducing the risk of miscalculation, or as our Chinese friends often say, stopping the downward spiral in the relationship, is something that's important," the official said.Particularly alarming for China's neighbours has been its reluctance to engage in regular military-to-military talks with Washington.Speaking at a press conference on Friday before departing for Beijing, Blinken said his trip had three main objectives: setting up mechanisms for crisis management; advancing U.S. and allies' interests; speaking directly about related concerns; and exploring areas of potential cooperation."If we want to make sure, as we do, that the competition that we have with China doesn't veer into conflict, the place you start is with communicating," Blinken said. Among topics likely to be discussed are potentially increasing commercial flights between the two countries, a U.S. official said, describing it as a move that would help promote people to people ties. Here is what is known so far:
– Each street lamp will be equipped with a camera with face recognition;

Wang Yi meets US Secretary of State Antony Blinken

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with China's top diplomat Wang Yi on Monday at the start of the second and final day of a rare visit to Beijing, aimed at ensuring that the many disagreements between the strategic rivals do not spiral into conflict.The two top diplomats shook hands in front of Chinese and US flags at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing, before moving into a meeting room with their delegations. They did not make any remarks beyond exchanging pleasantries.All eyes will be on whether Blinken will also meet with President Xi Jinping later in the day.Making the first visit to China by a US secretary of state in five years, Blinken held more than seven hours of "candid" and "constructive" talks with Foreign Minister Qin Gang on Sunday, although they did not appear to make concrete progress on the wide ranging disputes ranging from trade to technology to Taiwan.Both sides expressed a desire to stabilise bilateral ties despite what one US official called their "profound" differences, and agreed that Qin would visit Washington to continue the conversation, though no date was announced.Behind closed doors, Qin told Blinken that relations between the United States and China "are at the lowest point since the establishment of diplomatic relations", according to state-run broadcaster CCTV."This does not conform to the fundamental interests of the two peoples, nor does it meet the common expectations of the international community," Qin said during the talks at the ancient gardens.He also issued a warning on Taiwan, saying "The Taiwan issue is the core of China's core interests, the most important issue in China-US relations and the most prominent risk."In an editorial published on Monday, the state-run Global Times said, "Despite very low expectations for any breakthroughs made during Blinken's visit to China, there is still hope that both sides can maintain their 'bottom line' in the relationship.” (Agencies)

A GREAT CHANGE UPON THIS EARTH
Word Received: April 23, 2022

A well-known secretary of state will be in the news. Exposures, scandals, and shame this person will be enveloped in. There is no getting away from judgment or justice, no matter how hard they have tried to hide their crimes. Justice is not coming; it is here, saith the Lord.

China And US Hold ‘Candid’ Talks In Beijing

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to China on Sunday for high-profile talks with his Chinese counterpart, Qin Gang, and other senior officials. Blinken has become the most senior US official to visit Beijing since President Joe Biden took office in 2021.

The first day of Blinken’s visit involved talks between him and China’s recently-appointed Foreign Minister Qin, formerly Beijing’s ambassador to Washington. The closed-door negotiations ran for over five hours, with both sides providing little detail in the aftermath of the talks. Blinken’s spokesperson, Matthew Miller, described the words only as "candid, substantive, and constructive" in a tight-lipped statement.
