China's Covid-19 epidemic has 'basically ended'

The nation’s health authorities said on Thursday the country's Covid-19 epidemic has "basically" ended, but it is not completely over as they have found seven imported cases of the highly-transmissible XBB.1.5 variant since January 8.Officials, speaking at a news event with several departments attending, said the mainland has set an example for populous nations in Covid prevention and control. However, health officials and experts said they were also monitoring the XBB.1.5 sub-variant of Omicron. On January 4, data had showed no new variant was found in the country.Officials said on Thursday one local case of the variant was linked with an imported case on February 3. Meanwhile, two airports in the financial hub Shanghai saw marked increases in passenger throughput in January, thanks to the nation’s optimised Covid response and entry-exit policies, Shanghai Customs said on Thursday. In January, passenger throughput at Hongqiao International Airport exceeded 2.6 million, up 37.5 percent year on year. Meanwhile, Pudong International Airport handled over 2.8 million passenger trips, an increase of 34.2 percent from a year ago. (Reuters/Xinhua)

More mainland families on the fence on home buying

The number of mainland households that decided against buying a home rose in the fourth quarter of 2022, a private survey showed, as the Covid epidemic sapped sentiment. But more households were considering buying a home or investing in other assets in the coming three months, according to the survey by a research institute and think tank under Ant Group and the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, in Sichuan, released on Wednesday. The number of families opting to stay on the sidelines for property in the last quarter rose to 27.2 percent of respondents from 20.1 percent in July-October, the survey showed. However, it also found 16.6 percent of mainland families had plans to buy a home in the coming three months, up from 7.0 percent in the July-October quarter.Respondents' willingness to allocate money to domestic stocks, funds, and overseas asset classes also increased, the survey showed.China's real estate sector, once a key driver of the world's second-largest economy, fell into a slump in 2022 as debt-ridden developers failed to complete stalled projects and some buyers boycotted mortgage payments.A tentative revival was seen in the property sector in January, with home prices rising for the first time in a year, boosted by the government's aggressive support measures late last year and lower mortgage rates. CE says whistle-stop trip to GBA is just the start

Chief Executive John Lee says Thursday's maiden visit to the Greater Bay Area is just the beginning of a push to cement ties with neighbouring cities and attract talent to the region.Lee, who is leading a delegation of officials on a whistle-stop tour of Guangzhou and Shenzhen, said there would be many more opportunities for exchanges, starting with a visit to Macau next week. Speaking after talks with top officials in Guangzhou, he told reporters: “We discussed how to promote high-value development. This is not just an area we should all aim at, it is an area we must go into, otherwise the value of creation will be discounted,” he said. “This visit also means that there will be many other visits which will eventually create extra value through face-to-face contact, through building mutual understanding, and also aligning aims and objectives.” Lee, who is making his first visit to Guangdong since taking office, added that he would lead a group of ministers on a visit to Macau next week, as well as a delegation of lawmakers that will go to the nine cities in the Greater Bay Area in April. Meanwhile, the CE also said the administration had taken action to optimise arrangements for its Top Talent Pass Scheme, to ensure that people can only come to the SAR if their arrival is in Hong Kong's interests. It follows the administration's move earlier this week to strip controversial genetic scientist He Jiankui of his visa under the new scheme. He had previously been jailed on the mainland, and applicants under the scheme must now declare whether they have a criminal record. “[For] people who have a criminal record, we have to of course examine what this criminal record is all about, so as to assess whether his entry into Hong Kong is for the overall good for the society. This is the standard we will maintain in all visits and arrivals into Hong Kong.” he said. Lee added that he hoped to make it easier for top professionals in the Greater Bay Area to apply for a multiple-entry visa for Hong Kong. The chief executive returns to Hong Kong on Thursday evening after meeting officials in Shenzhen, including Mayor Qin Weizhong.

#China is losing #money to the tune of billions. For the first time in two years, more money left China than entered as imports grow and exports fall, and Chinese shipping containers dawdle around empty Chinese ports. What’s driving this trend? Is it all due to China’s draconian zero-COVID policy? Or are other factors at play?
