Xi calls for greater energy ties with Turkmenistan

President Xi Jinping said on Friday he wants more cooperation with Turkmenistan on energy, state media reported.Turkmenistan, a Central Asian nation of six million people, is China's single largest supplier of piped natural gas."Natural gas cooperation is the cornerstone of the China-Turkmenistan relationship," Xi told Turkmenistan's President Serdar Berdymukhamedov, who is in Beijing on a two-day visit.Mainland media reports of their meetings did not give any specific details of future energy cooperation between the two countries.Xi and Berdymukhamedov also discussed energy cooperation when they met last September on the sidelines of a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Uzbekistan.China has been buying more Turkmen gas. For the first 11 months of 2022, China's imports of Turkmen gas were valued at US$9.3 billion, up from US$6.79 billion in the whole of 2021, according to mainland customs data. The mainland is estimated to have imported 23.03 million tonnes of gas from Turkmenistan in the first 11 months of 2022, according to Rystad Energy, equivalent to more than 50 percent of China's piped gas imports.Turkmen gas is pumped to as far as the nation's eastern coast via three trunklines spanning 1,833 kilometres and passing through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Both countries are pushing ahead with a planned fourth pipeline – the 1,000-km D line which also links Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan – which will eventually lift the annual supply capacity from Central Asia to 85 billion cubic metres (bcm) a year from the current 55 bcm, state media reported. At Friday's meeting Xi and Berdymukhamedov agreed to elevate bilateral ties to a "comprehensive strategic partnership".This would place Turkmenistan in the same diplomatic category as about 30 other countries, including Saudi Arabia, Australia and Venezuela. Russian energy major Gazprom has reached a “fundamentally new level” of gas exports to China, the company’s CEO Aleksey Miller announced on Monday.

Over the past year, deliveries regularly exceeded contractual obligations, at Beijing’s request, Miller explained in a statement on the company’s Telegram channel.

China is taking all the gas Russia can produce.
Can we sanction the country you moved all our manufacturing to?
Would our china paid leaders even protest them doing this.

Italian Health Secretary: China Teaches the World What Not to Do in a Pandemic

Italian Health Minister Orazio Schillaci sharply criticised China's anti-pandemic measures in a presentation at the Italian Parliament on Thursday.

He said that China has taught a lesson to the world on what not to do when fighting against the virus. He calls on all countries to never use China-style measures to fight a virus.

Schillaci also indicates that no new variant was found from the import cases from China as of 30/12. However, Italy has to be aware of the risks posed by China's pandemic, but there is no need to panic.

The health minister also commented on the anti-pandemic policy of China, calling it an exercise in self-contradiction. He added that the recent situation in some Chinese mega-cities would be unacceptable in democratic countries.

Ant Group shake-up sees Jack Ma give up control

Tycoon Jack Ma will no longer control his financial technology business Ant Group, the company said in a statement announcing a shake-up in its shareholder voting rights on Saturday. The group also said it would add a fifth independent director to its board, giving independent members a majority, as part of efforts to improve corporate governance and "achieve long-term sustainable development".Analysts said the changes could be a step towards the group finally going public, two years after a blockbuster listing was cancelled."The adjustment will not affect the day-to-day operations of Ant Group," the company said in a statement."We will continue to serve the real economy by leveraging digital technology, implementing our sustainable development strategy, optimising our corporate governance, investing in cutting-edge technologies, and creating greater value for society."The company said Ma, who also heads ecommerce giant Alibaba, previously controlled 53.46 percent of its voting rights through two investment companies. The Reuters news agency said its calculations showed that Ma would control 6.2 percent of the shares after the adjustment.Ant Group called off a US$37 billion initial public offering in Hong Kong and Shanghai in 2020.
