China dismisses UN's report on Xinjiang as 'lies'

China on Thursday dismissed a report on Xinjiang by the United Nations human rights office as a ‘farce’ based on false information, saying it’s designed to be used as a political tool by the west against the country. In a statement posted on its website, the spokesperson for China’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, Liu Yuyin, said the 48-page report has slandered China, interfered in its internal affairs, and seriously damaged the credibility and impartiality of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).“The OHCHR’s so-called ‘assessment’ is based on the presumption of guilt, using false information and lies fabricated by anti-China forces as the main source of information, deliberately ignoring authoritative information and objective materials provided by the Chinese government,” Liu said.“This so-called ‘assessment’ is a farce planned by the United States, western countries and anti-China forces.”He also accused the UN rights office of ignoring human rights achievements made together by “people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang”, noting that it has been free from terrorism for more than five years. The OHCHR’s report said China's “arbitrary and discriminatory detention” of Uyghurs and other Muslims in Xinjiang may constitute crimes against humanity. It added that "serious human rights violations have been committed" in Xinjiang "in the context of the government's application of counter-terrorism and counter-extremism strategies".UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet released the report just minutes before her four-year term ended. She visited China in May.Speaking ahead of the report's release, China's ambassador to the United Nations in New York, Zhang Jun, said Beijing had repeatedly voiced opposition to it.He said the UN human rights chief should not interfere in China's internal affairs."We all know, so well, that the so-called Xinjiang issue is a completely fabricated lie out of political motivations and its purpose definitely is to undermine China's stability and to obstruct China's development," Zhang told reporters on Wednesday."We do not think it will produce any good to anyone, it simply undermines the cooperation between the United Nations and a member state," he said. 🇨🇳🇹🇼📃🇨🇳☭ Global Times commentator Hu Xijin on yesterday, August 31, 2022 on twitter:
— "A warning to Taiwan troops: never shoot down drones from the mainland.

They probably belong to civilian hobbyists.

But once they’re shot down, there will be an explosion of public opinion.

The PLA is bound to respond and retaliate against a certain target of the Taiwan side."

🇨🇳🦠🛂⚠️🇬🇧 Reuters: Chengdu locks down 21.2 million people as Chinese cities battle COVID
— " One of China's biggest cities, Chengdu, announced a lockdown of its 21.2 million residents as it launched four days of citywide COVID-19 testing, as some of country's most populous and economically important urban centres battle outbreaks.

All residents in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, were ordered to stay largely at home from 6 p.m. on Thursday, with households allowed to send one person per day to shop for necessities, the city government said in a statement.

Chengdu is the largest city to be locked down since Shanghai was shut for two months earlier this year. It remained unclear whether the lockdown will be lifted after the mass testing scheme is carried out through to Sunday."

🇨🇳🦠🛂⚠️🇺🇸 Bloomberg: China Locks Down Megacity Chengdu as Covid Zero Intensified
— "The Chinese metropolis of Chengdu will lock down its 21 million residents to contain a Covid-19 outbreak, a seismic move in the country’s vast Western region that has largely been untouched by the virus.

The capital of Sichuan province, Chengdu will be the biggest city to shut down since Shanghai’s bruising two-month lockdown earlier this year. The move -- which will upend the lives of millions of people and businesses, with repercussions for China’s economy and beyond -- shows the country’s commitment to the Covid Zero approach espoused by President Xi Jinping, despite the disruption it’s causing.

The lockdown of Chengdu starts Thursday night and comes after officials reported 157 new Covid cases for Wednesday. The city, which accounts for about 1.7% of China’s gross domestic product, is home to technology companies and automakers, including Toyota Motor Corp. and VW China. Foxconn Technology Group, the world’s largest assembler of Apple Inc.’s iPhones and other devices, makes iPads in the area. Intel Corp. and other foreign firms also have facilities in the city."
