EU denounces overhaul of HK political system

The European Union denounced on Wednesday Hong Kong's major overhaul of its political system as a breach by China of its international commitments and threatened to send a delegation to visit the autonomous city.The possible move is likely to irk Beijing which might see it as an interference with its domestic affairs and may further sour relations after the EU put on hold an investment deal with China over concerns about Hong Kong, China's claims to sovereignty in most of the South China Sea, and the mass detentions of Muslim Uyghurs in northwestern China.The EU "will intensify its response to the situation in Hong Kong, notably through increasing support to its civil society and media, promoting freedom of expression, facilitating mobility of Hong Kong citizens, as well as ensuring observation of the trials of pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong," the bloc's top diplomat Josep Borrell said in a statement."A visit of high-level EU officials will be considered," he added.The legislative changes adopted by Hong Kong's lawmakers late in May will reduce the proportion of seats in the legislature that are filled by direct elections from half to less than a quarter. A new body will vet candidates and bar those deemed insufficiently patriotic towards China from standing. (Reuters)

Planned Chinese university in Hungary rouses widespread protest

There are no signs of any excavators or cranes yet in the Budapest district of Ferencvaros. But Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government is hoping to see them roar into action soon. China's renowned Shanghai-based Fudan University intends to open its first foreign campus here in 2024 as the first Chinese university in the European Union.

But the plan has met with considerable opposition. According to a recent poll by Budapest's Republikon Institute, 66% of Hungarians oppose the construction project, including many supporters of the ruling Fidesz party. The opposition is trying to prevent the campus with all means at its disposal, above all, Budapest's mayor, Gergely Karacsony of Hungary's green-liberal party Parbeszed. He wants to enter the race against Viktor Orban in next year's parliamentary elections for the united opposition list.

Europe to crank up regulatory pressure on China

This week, the EU will in a far more low-key and technocratic way take a step in a similar direction, as it unveils legislation to crack down on market-distorting subsidies from China and other third countries. 

The proposed regulation, first reported by the FT last week, would allow the commission to block takeovers of big EU companies if the purchase was juiced by public handouts from outside the bloc. It would also prevent some procurement bids when competition was warped by taxpayer money. 

The rules, championed by Margrethe Vestager, Brussels’ competition enforcer, were drafted with China firmly in mind and will be accompanied by a paper examining the bloc’s ability to stand industrially on its own two feet.

Bats NOT sold at Wuhan market, research reveals - rules out bats-to-human theory??

Research by an Oxford professor has revealed that no bats or pangolins were sold at the Wuhan wet market between May 2017 and November 2019, potentially ruling out the theory that coronavirus was passed directly from them to humans.

A joint research project between Oxford University and two Chinese institutions had been investigating tick-borne diseases from 2017 and had records of creatures at the market.

Prof David Macdonald also claimed that bats are actually rarely sold at markets in Central China, with many images used in fact showing Indonesian markets.
