New Zealand 'uncomfortable' with expanding Five Eyes

New Zealand said it is "uncomfortable" with expanding the role of the Five Eyes, a post-war intelligence grouping which also includes the United States, Britain, Australia and Canada, recently criticised by China.China is New Zealand's largest trading partner, and Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta said in a speech that New Zealand sought a predictable diplomatic relationship.New Zealand will find it necessary to speak out on issues where it does not agree with China, including developments in Hong Kong and the treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang, she said in a speech on Monday to the government-funded New Zealand China Council. In later comments to media reported by New Zealand's Newshub, Mahuta said New Zealand didn't favour invoking the Five Eyes for "messaging out on a range of issues that really exist out of the remit of the Five Eyes"."We are uncomfortable with expanding the remit of the Five Eyes," she said.China's foreign ministry has repeatedly criticised the Five Eyes, after all members issued a joint statement about the treatment of Hong Kong pro-democracy legislators in November.Last month, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said "the Five Eyes have taken coordinated steps to gang up on China", after Australia and New Zealand issued a joint statement on Xinjiang.Last year, the Five Eyes discussed cooperation beyond intelligence sharing, including on critical technology, Hong Kong, supply chains and the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a statement by Australia's Foreign Minister Marise Payne in 2020.Mahuta's office told Reuters it couldn't provide a copy of her comments on the Five Eyes.Payne will travel to New Zealand on Wednesday for meetings with Mahuta and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, the first diplomatic visit between the neighbouring countries since borders reopened both ways.Canberra has recently endured a rockier relationship with Beijing than Wellington, with Australia's trade minister unable to secure a call with his Chinese counterpart as exporters were hit with multiple trade sanctions from China.A diplomatic dispute between China and Australia worsened in 2020 after Canberra lobbied for an international inquiry into the source of the coronavirus pandemic.China and New Zealand upgraded a free trade agreement in January, when, Mahuta said, trade ministers had held a "constructive" call. The Alarming Human Toll of Cheap Stuff ‘Made in China’

In the aftermath of 2020 — a year that saw both the expansion of a vast detention and forced labor system in the western Chinese province of Xinjiang and a homebound global population increasingly reliant on goods delivered anonymously to their doorstep — Pang’s book feels timely and urgent. Her argument starts here, in the room with the mushrooms, and goes like this: that the way we consume is unsustainable; that things as seemingly trivial as paper mushrooms and Halloween decorations are entangled in a system that hides atrocity by design and makes complicity — with authoritarian governments, with dangerous working conditions and even with religious persecution — part of modern life. Pang, a freelance journalist who grew up in a Mandarin-speaking household, is most effective when she is drawing out these juxtapositions, putting production and torture matter-of-factly side by side.

Expert calls for China to abolish two-child limit

China could see its number of births slide below 10 million annually in the next five years if the government does not quickly abolish its policy of limiting families to two children, an expert was quoted in domestic media as saying.China's total population may also fall in a few years, Dong Yuzheng, director at the Guangdong Academy of Population Development, told Yicai, a Chinese financial news outlet. The number of babies born in China fell by 580,000 to 14.65 million in 2019 and the birth rate of 10.48 per thousand was the lowest since 1949 when present methods of collating data began, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. It has yet to disclose a figure for last year, although it typically releases such data at the end of February. The country's falling birth rate and its rapidly greying society is expected to test its ability to pay and care for its elderly.Although China abolished its decades-long one-child policy in 2016, couples have been discouraged from having larger families by the rising costs of healthcare, education and housing. Economic uncertainties brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic have further weighed on decisions to have children.Separate data from the Ministry of Public Security shows the number of births last year plunged 15 percent to 10.035 million births from 11.79 million in 2019.The ministry may not be counting some children in rural areas, said Liu Kaiming, a labour expert in the southern city of Shenzhen, adding that he expects the number of newborns in 2020 to be between 10 million and 14 million."(The number of births) may fall below 10 million next year," Liu said.China has also yet to announce the results of a once-a-decade census. It previously said the results would be released in early April. (Reuters)

'Taiwan seeking more long-range missiles from US'

Taiwan is seeking to acquire long-range, air-launched cruise missiles from the United States, a defence official said on Monday, as the Chinese-claimed island bolsters its forces in the face of increasing pressure from Beijing. While Taiwan is developing its own long-range missiles, to give it an ability to strike back deep into China in the event of war, it has also looked to the United States to help provide it more advanced weaponry. Asked in parliament which weapons systems Taiwan wants to buy but the United States has not yet said it can, Lee Shih-chiang, head of Taiwan's defence ministry's strategic planning department, named Lockheed Martin Corp's AGM-158. "We are still in the process of seeking it" from the United States, Lee said. "Communication channels are very smooth and normal." He did not elaborate. The AGM-158 JASSM - standing for Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile - can have a range of almost 1,000 km depending on the model, and be fixed to aircraft including F-16s, which Taiwan operates. Lockheed Martin says the missile is designed to destroy high-value, well-defended, fixed and relocatable targets, and be launched far enough away to keep the launch aircraft well away from enemy air defence systems. China has stepped up military activity near Taiwan, as it tries to force the government in Taipei to accept Beijing's claims of sovereignty. Taiwan's armed forces, dwarfed by China's, are in the midst of a modernisation programme to offer a more effective deterrent, including the ability to hit back at bases far from China's coast in the event of a conflict. President Tsai Ing-wen has stressed the importance of developing an "asymmetrical" deterrent, using mobile equipment that is hard to find and destroy, and capable of hitting targets far away from Taiwan. Washington, Taipei's main foreign arms supplier, has been eager to create a military counterbalance to Chinese forces, building on an effort known within the Pentagon as "Fortress Taiwan". (Reuters)

China’s sanctions on me and others are a clumsy attempt to silence debate

Michael Chong is the Conservative foreign affairs critic and MP for Wellington-Halton Hills.

China is trying to silence the truth abroad, after having silenced it at home.

Just over two weeks ago, I woke up to news that China’s government had sanctioned me, adding me to a list of officials in the United States, Britain and Europe who have been sanctioned for simply speaking. Speaking against Beijing’s genocide of its Uyghur Muslim minority. Speaking against its crackdown on Hong Kong.

This is very alarming, as CCP big tech is able to surveil everyone, which poses a serious security threat.

Huawei staff were able to eavesdrop on all mobile numbers on the KPN network, according to a 2010 internal company record.

China 🇨🇳 boasts about starting a war when it comes to closer ties between Taiwan 🇹🇼 and USA 🇺🇸. It’s Navy could be in large numbers, however, with its Soviet time older naval fleet, will it be any comparison with the American navy?
Not only is #CCP trying to expand its influence on just Taiwan, but altogether in South China Sea, and globally. It is time for the global democracy allies to unite and put an end to this dirty organization called CCP, which says Party is Nation, while giving least regard to the people in China and the world. CCP recognizes no Humanity, but Tyranny. It’s never too late. This is the time to boycott all the global projects of this dirty organization. It’s not a world savior, but an end to existence of life on this planet.
