Chinese authorities have detained a Bloomberg News journalist on suspicion of threatening national security

Chinese authorities detained Haze Fan, a staffer in the Bloomberg News office in Beijing, on suspicion of endangering national security. Fan, who is a Chinese citizen, was last seen being taken away from her apartment in Beijing by plainclothes security officials after speaking with one of her editors

Fan, who covers Chinese business-news topics for Bloomberg, started working for the publication in 2017. She previously worked for Al Jazeera, CBS News, CNBC, and Thomson Reuters.

The US and China have been imposing sanctions on each other's journalists. The US has labeled Chinese media organizations as government entities.

Swiss to get tougher on China human rights, says minister

Note: this article was published on 21 March 2021.

...

Asked about China’s Hong Kong policy, the foreign minister \[Ignazio Cassis] said Switzerland was concerned about the shrinking of democratic rights. On the issue of human rights abuses against China’s Uighurs, he replied that it was a clear violation of minority rights and that Switzerland has made its concerns clear to Beijing.

Defence deal blocked

Meanwhile, the federal government has banned state-owned defence firm Ruag from supplying ammunition to the Hong Kong police, reports the SonntagsBlick newspaper. The company had planned to supply cartridges mainly used for military sniper rifles, but an oversight group from different government departments has decided that there is too great a risk of this ammunition being used against civilians.

International Olympics Commission Purchasing Chinese Vaccines. Japan’s Olympic Minister: Did Not Know about This Beforehand and Japanese Athletes Will Not Be Administered with the Chinese Vaccines

According to a report from Asahi Shimbun, after attending a cabinet meeting on 12th March, Japan’s Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa was asked by reporters about International Olympics Commission (IOC) Chairperson Thomas Bach’s announcement of purchasing COVID-19 vaccines from China. Marukawa indicated that she did not know about this beforehand. She said there is no arrangement with IOC and no adjustments are needed regarding this issue. She also emphasized that having received COVID-19 vaccines will not be a prerequisite for participating in the Tokyo Olympics, that this principle remains the same. Marukawa further indicated that the Japanese government does not have more information about this issue, that “all the information we know is from IOC’s website and reports from news media”.

China accuses EU of 'hypocrisy' over Uyghur row

Beijing accused the EU of "hypocrisy" on Wednesday after the two sides summoned each other's envoys in an escalating row over the treatment of China's Muslim Uyghurs.France, Germany and other EU nations called in Chinese ambassadors to protest against sanctions imposed by Beijing targeting their citizens, including five members of the European Parliament as well as two EU bodies and two think-tanks.The sanctions were a tit-for-tat response after the EU, Britain and Canada blacklisted four former and current officials in China's Xinjiang region.China called in the EU and British envoys in Beijing over the coordinated move.Rights groups say at least one million Uyghurs and other mostly Muslim minorities have been incarcerated in camps in Xinjiang, where authorities are also accused of forcibly sterilising women and imposing forced labour.China has strongly denied the allegations, saying training programmes, work schemes and better education have helped stamp out extremism in the northwest region and raise income."The EU only allows itself to arbitrarily smear and attack others, and even arbitrarily imposes sanctions based on false information and lies, but does not allow the Chinese to talk back or fight back," said foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying at a press briefing."This in itself is double standards, a manifestation of bullying and hypocrisy."Washington, which had already imposed sanctions on two of the Chinese officials in July 2020, extended them to two others. It is leading a drive to form a united front against China on issues from rights abuses in Xinjiang and Hong Kong to Beijing's claims over the South China Sea.China had until recently enjoyed relatively cordial relations with the EU, which has been muted over alleged rights abuses as it hunts a trade pact with the world's second largest economy. The European Union and China in December approved "in principle" a major investment pact after seven years of painstaking negotiations – but it is still expected to take months to be finalised and fully ratified as a legal text.Hua said China did "not accept the unreasonable practice of some European countries in summoning Chinese ambassadors."The tensions come as the EU seeks to formulate a strategy on China at a time when tensions between Beijing and Washington are emerging as the world's number one geopolitical issue.Beijing also released a report on Wednesday detailing what it said were human rights abuses committed in the US, citing gun crime, violence towards ethnic minorities and the way Washington has tackled the Covid-19 outbreak."The United States, which has always considered itself an exception and superior, saw its own epidemic situation go out of control, accompanied by political disorder, inter-ethnic conflicts, and social division," the report claimed. Canadian government invokes national security to block Chinese takeover of Nunavut gold mine

Canada has blocked a Chinese state-owned mining company from purchasing a gold mine in Nunavut on national security grounds, signalling a new escalation of already high tensions between the two countries.

“The one thing I would say is that in taking action, the government has definitely shown that what we have built in Nunavut, they see as a important to Canada and nationally,” Jason Neal, chief executive of TMAC, said. Neal believed the government should be more supportive of companies that build infrastructure in Nunavut and other parts of the Arctic.
