The executive order wouldn’t fix the near-term chip shortage, White House officials acknowledged, but the hope is to produce a longer term plan to prevent future supply chain problem. Other countries should follow suit!

Chinese Authorities Arrest Former Reporter and Netizen for Weibo Comments

On February 19, 2021, China’s state broadcaster released footage of China-India border clash in June 2020, in which four Chinese #PLA soldiers were killed.

On the same day, former Chinese reporter Chou Ze-ming (仇子明) wrote on his #Weibo page ridiculing the Chinese troop commander who survived the clash. He also questioned the casualties of the clash could be more than four.

Chao’s Weibo account was reportedly put to freeze for one year. On February 20, 2021, Chao was even arrested and detained on suspicion of "provoking disturbances". Another citizen, surnamed Chan was also arrested for spreading comments denigrating Chinese soldiers.

Expert Testifies in Hearing: #China likely to attack #Taiwan within five years

//China's military modernization plus US failure to build robust coalitions to counter Beijing's regional aggression could lead to a Taiwan takeover

“Cross-strait deterrence is arguably weaker today than at any point since the Korean War,” said Oriana Skylar Mastro, a fellow at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies who specializes in Chinese military policy. She was speaking at a virtual hearing Feb. 18 before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, which was examining U.S. deterrence policies aimed at preventing a future attack on Taiwan by Beijing.

“Impressive military modernization on the part of China, U.S. failure to build robust coalitions to counter Chinese regional aggression, and [Chinese President] Xi Jinping’s personal ambition, all have coalesced to create a situation for Beijing in which the benefits of using force more and more are becoming so high that they outweigh the costs,” she continued.

“I believe the greatest threat now is that Beijing will launch a military operation to force ‘reunification,’ in their words, irrespective of Washington’s or Taipei’s policies or actions,” Mastro said. She added that Chinese military leaders have told her they believe Xi will conclude that the Chinese military will have the capability to occupy and seize Taiwan in a year or two even as some Western analysts predict that it is more likely five years or more from that goal.//

Chinese Coast Guard Enters Waters Near Diaoyu Islands for 2 Consecutive Days after the Coast Guard Law Passed

After the China Coast Guard (CCG) Law taking into effect this month, Chinese coast guard vessels entered the waters near the Diaoyu Islands (known as the Senkaku Islands in Japan) for two consecutive days. The islands are under sovereignty dispute with Japan.

According to Japan's 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, two Chinese Coast Guard vessels had entered Japanese territorial waters near the Japan-claimed Senkaku Islands on Tuesday at around 4:45 a.m. Japanese authorities said that the Chinese Coast Guard vessels turned their bow toward two Japanese fishing boats and tried to approach them. The Japan Coast Guard deployed patrol boats to ensure the safety of the fishing boats and issued a warning to the Chinese Coast Guard, asking them to leave the territorial waters.

12 Japanese firms will end business deals involving Uighur forced labour

Last year (2020), the Australian Strategic Policy Institute report identified over 80 global companies “directly or indirectly benefiting from the use of Uighur workers outside Xinjiang through abusive labou\r transfer program.” And it mentioned 14 Japanese companies.

12 Japanese companies, including Sony Corp., Hitachi Ltd., and Fast Retailing Co., an operator of Uniqlo, responded to cease or consider ceasing business with business partners found to be using forced labour.

As many foreign companies rely on self-reporting of the human rights situation by the firms themselves, they are faced with the challenge of grasping the situation beyond direct business partners.

Indian pharma firms go local seeking to end reliance on China

Indian drug companies are looking to local makers of so-called active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) or trying to make them in-house in a bid to end their reliance on China as ties between the two countries soured after a deadly border clash last June.

Disruption to supplies from China due to the COVID-19 pandemic was also a major factor driving them to reduce reliance on China in the supply of API.

Executives at India’s Cadila Healthcare, Cipla, Sun Pharmaceutical and ‎Biocon said they were aggressively working on reducing the dependence on the richer rival for raw materials.
