Searing heatwaves sweep across China

Flooding and extreme high temperatures have caused multiple deaths in eastern China as summer heat descends earlier than usual. Record-high temperatures have been reported in Zhejiang province, east of the business hub of Shanghai, topping out above 42 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The neighbouring coastal provinces of Jiangsu and Fujian were also suffering under high heat, while Henan, Sichuan and Heilongjiang further inland saw many hospitalised for heat stroke. The hot spell of the past 30 days has been described by Chinese weather watchers as widespread, prolonged and extreme and, due to higher demand for air-conditioning, the load on the power grids of seven provinces and regions has hit a record high, according to state media. The hashtag #heatstroke was trending on social media with 2.45 million views on the Weibo platform, with discussions ranging from people being admitted to hospital to the detrimental effects of long-term heat exposure.Floods have meanwhile struck much of the country, with three people reported killed and five missing in Sichuan province’s Pingwu county as of midday on Wednesday. One person was reported dead and eight missing in Heilongjiang in the northeast.Experts say such extreme weather events are becoming more likely because of climate change. Warmer air can store more water, leading to bigger cloudbursts when it’s released.Hundreds of thousands in south-central China have already been displaced by flooding. (Agencies)

TikTok maker ByteDance releases new lifestyle app

TikTok's Chinese owner ByteDance is looking for its next big hit by wading deeper into the lifestyle sector of social media with Kesong, a shopping and lifestyle recommendations app similar to market leader Xiaohongshu.Kesong, launched last week, allows users to share photos, videos and write-ups of fashion tips and shopping experiences. It emulates Xiaohongshu, often likened to Instagram and which is widely considered the embodiment of "planting grass" – the notion that reviews can entice readers or followers to buy a product or service.Fashion and luxury brands often turn to Xiaohongshu's influencers who can reach millions of affluent users in China. Overseas, Xiaohongshu is known as Red in countries including Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Canada and the United States.Hardware and software maker ByteDance was valued at around US$300 billion in recent trades and has become known as something of an app factory. It has produced a string of hits from news aggregator Toutiao to short video app Douyin and its overseas equivalent TikTok, China's most successful app abroad. It tried its hand at a "planting grass" app in 2018 with the short-lived Xincao. It tried again in 2020 with Sharee, aimed at overseas markets. Later renamed Lemon8, the app has over a million downloads in Japan and has expanded into Thailand. (Reuters)
