#Taiwan's June 4 Vigil Attendance at 10-year high; Hongkonger: "I felt like I was in #VictoriaPark"
In 2022, the June 4 candlelight vigil in Taiwan drew 2000 attendees, reaching a 10-year high.
Tsang Chi-ho, former host of RTHK's satire show Headliners, was in attendance. The Hong Kong media personality said that the vigil felt both sad and dreamy: "For a moment, I felt like I was in Victoria Park."
Lam Wing-kee, owner of Causeway Bay Books in Taipei, said that there was a lot more people this year. "A lot of Hongkongers came over [to Taiwan]; half the people here are Hongkongers."
The vigil's organizer is Zeng Jianyuan, president of the New School for Democracy Association.
Speaking to Chaser News, he said that they had prepared 1000 electronic candles, and they were all handed out that evening. "So at least 1000 people attending, 2000 at the peak. It should be the biggest turnout in the last dozen years or so."
He said that during Ma Ying-jeou's presidency, the Kuomintang had cancelled Taiwan's June 4 vigil. Since then, the vigil at Taipei's Liberty Square was revived thanks to the efforts of Hongkongers.
"Early on, it was Hong Kong students; now there's huge numbers of Hongkongers, as well as artists and scholars from Hong Kong. Their participation here in Taiwan built up the whole event. In the past few years, after the universal suffrage movement and #AntiELAB protests, a lot of Hongkongers came to Taiwan. This is why today's theme is very clear. It's about Hong Kong."
"I think today's event is successful," he said of the candlelight vigil, "but now that Taiwan is hosting it alone, it also makes me feel a little sad."

Stop smearing China, defence minister tells US
Defence Minister Wei Fenghe said on Sunday that it was up to the United States to improve the bilateral relationship, as ties were at a critical juncture.Repeating several times at an Asian security meeting that China only sought peace and stability, and was not an aggressor, he called on the United States to "strengthen solidarity and oppose confrontation and division".He said China firmly rejected "US smearing, accusations and even threats" in US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin's speech on Saturday."We request the US side to stop smearing and containing China. Stop interfering in China's internal affairs. The bilateral relationship cannot improve unless the US side can do that," Wei told the Shangri-La Dialogue.Austin said on Saturday there had been an "alarming" increase in the number of unsafe and unprofessional encounters between Chinese planes and vessels with those of other countries. He added that the United States would stand by its allies.Russia's attack on Ukraine has taken centre stage at the meeting, and Wei made a point of saying China supported peace talks and opposed "providing weapons, applying maximum pressure"."What is the root cause of this crisis? Who is the mastermind behind this? Who loses the most? And who stands to gain the most? Who is promoting peace and who is adding fuel to the fire? I think we all know the answers to these questions," he said, without addressing them.In an address via video link on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned delegates that the attack on Ukraine threatened the rules-based order and put the entire world in danger of famine and food crises.Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special operation” that it says is not designed to occupy territory but to destroy its southern neighbour's military capabilities and capture what it regards as dangerous nationalists.Wei noted that China had contributed to global efforts to fight Covid-19, and that the country's efforts to develop the South China Sea were peaceful."Countries big and small, weak or powerful, are all equal," he said. "We should respect each other and treat each other as equals." (Reuters)
