A rare and courageous move. A Xi'an resident uses his real name in a video to criticize the #Lockdown measures, saying the authorities 'treat people like livestock.'

World Muslim Leaders Boycott Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics

On December 30, 2021, The Global Imams Council (#GIC) made a decision to boycott the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

The Council is, according to its website, the "largest transnational non-governmental body of Muslim religious leaders from all Islamic Denominations and Schools of thought."

In a statement, the Council described China as a "tyrannical and oppressive regime that is responsible for the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Uyghurs".

Another 58 local Covid-19 infections, possibly linked to the outbreak of the Omicron variant in Tianjin, have been reported in Anyang City, in the north of Henan Province. The Xinhua News Agency said 84 locally-transmitted cases have now been confirmed in the city since the first case was reported on Saturday. The Anyang City government said the first cases are believed to be linked to the same transmission chain as the existing local cases in the Tianjin Municipality, which have been confirmed to be caused by Omicron. On Monday, local officials confirmed two of the patients had caught the highly-transmissible Covid strain from a student who returned to Anyang on December 28.The municipal government on Monday evening banned all vehicles from roads and required all residents to stay put while an epidemiological investigation is underway. All supermarkets have suspended business other than selling daily necessities. Shops have been closed and take-out services have also been suspended. Anyang City has a population of about 5.5 million people. In Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan, classroom teaching has been suspended along with dine-in services at restaurants and transport, as officials battle a coronavirus outbreak that's so far spread to more than 100 people.Tens of millions of nucleic acid tests have been carried out in six citywide mass testing campaigns, according to Xinhua.

China owed $385bn – including ‘hidden debt’ from poorer nations, says report

Researchers have identified debts of at least $385bn (£286bn) owed by 165 countries to China for “Belt and road initiative” (BRI) projects, with loans systematically underreported to international bodies such as the World Bank.

The four-year study by US-based research lab AidData said the debt burdens were kept off the public balance sheets through the use of special purpose and semi-private loans, and were “substantially larger than research institutions, credit rating agencies, or intergovernmental organisations with surveillance responsibilities previously understood”.

It found 42 low-to-middle income countries (LMICs) had debt exposure to China exceeding 10% of their GDP, including Laos, Papua New Guinea, the Maldives, Brunei, Cambodia and Myanmar.
