We do believe that they should. Private companies very often care about cash more than anything, but it disgusts us to think that even torture, rape and murder of thousands of people in concentration camps can't move them.

NHL players won't compete at Beijing Winter Olympics

National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed Wednesday that its superstar players will not compete at February's Beijing Winter Olympics due to Covid-19 disruptions. The league paused its season on Wednesday after 50 games had been postponed due to Covid-19 outbreaks, with plans to now reschedule those contests during the February 6-22 window of the Games in China."The National Hockey League respects and admires the desire of NHL Players to represent their countries and participate in a 'best on best' tournament," Bettman said in a statement Wednesday."Accordingly, we have waited as long as possible to make this decision while exploring every available option to enable our players to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games."Unfortunately, given the profound disruption to the NHL's regular-season schedule caused by recent Covid-related events -- 50 games already have been postponed through December 23 -- Olympic participation is no longer feasible."NHL elite global talent began playing at the Olympics in Nagano, Japan in 1998, with the league shutting down to allow players to represent their homelands, and NHL players last competed at the Olympics in 2014 at Sochi, Russia. The league decided not to send players to the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics but had agreed to a deal with the players union for competing at Beiing and in the 2026 Winter Olympics."We certainly acknowledge and appreciate the efforts made by the International Olympic Committee, the International Ice Hockey Federation and the Beijing Organizing Committee to host NHL players," Bettman said."But current circumstances have made it impossible for us to proceed despite everyone's best efforts. We look forward to Olympic participation in 2026."The league plans to have players return to clubs on Sunday to resume the season after that, with negative Covid-19 tests required for access to facilities as the NHL continues to follow Covid-19 health and safety protocols."Our focus and goal have been and must remain to responsibly and safely complete the entirety of the NHL regular season and Stanley Cup playoffs in a timely manner," Bettman said."Therefore, with stringent health protocols once again in place, we will begin utilizing available dates during the Feb. 6-22 window (originally contemplated to accommodate Olympic participation) to reschedule games that have been, or may yet be, postponed." A 200-megawatt reactor has come online to begin feeding power to the grid in China’s Shandong province. (Bloomberg)

The reactor, created by Huaneng Group, is the world’s first pebble-bed modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, which heats helium rather than water.

China is investing heavily in nuclear power, expected to pour nearly half-a-trillion dollars into new plants over the next decade.

Xi'an comes under lockdown to rein in Covid spread

China ordered the lockdown of as many as 13 million people in neighborhoods and workplaces in the northern city of Xi'an following a spike in coronavirus cases, setting off panic buying just weeks before the country hosts the Winter Olympic Games. City officials ordered all residents to stay home unless they had a pressing reason to go out and suspended all transport to and from the city apart from special cases. One person from each household will be permitted out every two days to buy household necessities, the order said. It took effect at midnight Wednesday, with no word on when it might be lifted. There was no word on whether the virus was the newly surging omicron variant or the far more common delta. China has recorded just seven omicron cases – four in Guangzhou, two in Changsha and one in Tianjin. Social media posts recorded panic buying of groceries and household products, with the government saying new supplies would be brought in. Xi’an on Thursday reported another 63 locally transmitted cases over the previous 24 hours, pushing the city's total to at least 211 over the past week. (Reuters)

Satellite Images Reveal Huge Antennas in South China Sea - “War of the Future” will be cyber (reports)

Huge antennas are popping up on islands in the South China Sea which the Center for Strategic and International Studies warns, Beijing is “taking major steps toward improving electronic warfare capabilities.”

“We could see effects as stodgy as making a tank impossible to start up, or sophisticated as retargeting a missile midair,” a Brookings Institute report contributed. (NY Post)

The report continues by saying the high-tech equipment will subvert US military functionality. “It’s not that bases will get blown up; it’s that some bases will lose power, data, and communications,” it said.

Virginia media outlet registered as foreign agent of Chinese Communist Party given US-government loan (reports)

Potomac Radio Group, registered as a foreign agent, for its work with China Global Television Network, received a $106,228 loan via the Small Business Admin in April 2020, a ProPublica reported revealed.

The company said it has been paid close to $4.4 million by CGTN and CCP-affiliated China Radio International in the past three years.

The Trump DoJ urged CGTN to register as a foreign agent of China in 2019, and the former president’s State Department designated that network and CRI as “foreign missions” of China in 2020.
