Not so GREEN TECH? Apple and Tesla hit amid China coal shortage, energy crunch!

The Big Tech giants are taking a hit as a number of their suppliers’ plants in China suspended operations this week to comply with strict electricity limiting policies.

The South China Morning Post reports at least 20 out of 31 provincial jurisdictions were forced to adopt electricity rationing measures last week - with the tight supply of coal triggering a plunge in the Chinese production.

The price of thermal coal - on which the country relies for over half its energy - has exploded from $104/ton in January to around $170/ton in September, but Beijing’s laws prohibit companies passing on rising costs to consumers, forcing them to take the hit instead.

China makes “LARGE” oil discovery, with 569 barrels per day capacity - amid power shortage!

China has apparently found new oil reserves of over 100mn tonnes after an offshore discovery well in its northeastern region of Bohai made a successful find in the China National Offshore Oil Company’s top field.

The probing well found 27-meter deep reserves of oil about 1.5km down, which the CNOOC say will yield 569 barrels per day following appraisal well tests.

Last week the company announced they would start oil production at another offshore field also in Bohai Bay that could reach a peak of 11,000 barrels per day by next year.

$385 BILLION debt to China UNREPORTED by 42 low-to-middle income countries for Belt and Road Initiative projects!

165 countries owe an eye-watering $843BN to China for Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects - with just less than half being systematically unreported by low-to-middle income countries (LMIs) according to a four-year study.

US-based research lab AidData revealed that a shift of Beijing’s investment model to 70% via state-owned companies rather than direct government lendings accounted for the less stringent declarations.

The researchers also revealed China is targeting countries with weak credit ratings through steep interest rates and aggressive repayment timeframes; 42 of the debtors have debt exposure over 10% of their entire GDP.

“Many poor governments could not take on any more loans,” AidData executive director Brad Parks told AFP. “So [China] got creative.”
