China rejects need for further WHO coronavirus origins probe
China on Friday rejected the World Health Organization’s calls for a renewed probe into the origins of COVID-19, saying it supported “scientific” over “political” efforts to find out how the virus started.
Pressure is once more mounting on Beijing to consider a fresh probe into the origins of a pandemic which has killed more than four million people and paralysed economies worldwide since it first emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.

CIA mulls a Special China Unit, in effort to OUT-SPY Beijing, Bloomberg reports (Is it too late?)
The proposal is part of the agency’s broader review of China’s capabilities, and would elevate the focus on Beijing within the CIA which has been part of a broader “Mission Center for East Asia and Pacific,” says Director William Burns.
“As Director Burns has said, China is one of his priorities, and CIA is in the process of determining how best to position ourselves to reflect the significance of this priority,” the agency said in a statement.
Last fall a House Intelligence Committee report concluded that US spy agencies are FAILING to meet the multifaceted challenge that China is posing.

Beijing rejects need for further Covid origins probe
Beijing on Friday rejected the World Health Organisation's calls for a renewed probe into the origins of Covid-19, saying it supported "scientific" over "political" efforts to find out how the virus started.Pressure is once more mounting on China to consider a fresh probe into the origins of a pandemic which has killed more than four million people and paralysed economies worldwide since it first emerged in the central mainland city of Wuhan.A delayed and heavily politicised visit by a WHO team of international experts went to Wuhan in January 2021 to produce a first phase report, which was written in conjunction with their Chinese counterparts. It failed to conclude how the virus began. On Thursday the WHO urged China to share raw data from the earliest Covid-19 cases to revive its probe into the origins of the disease.Beijing hit back, repeating its position that the initial investigation was enough and that calls for further data were motivated by politics instead of scientific inquiry."We oppose political tracing ... and abandoning the joint report" issued after the WHO expert team's Wuhan visit in January, vice foreign minister Ma Zhaoxu told reporters. "We support scientific tracing."That report said the virus jumping from bats to humans via an intermediate animal was the most probable scenario, while a leak from Wuhan's virology labs was "extremely unlikely".Ma rejected suggestions of new lines of investigation."The conclusions and recommendations of WHO and China joint report were recognised by the international community and the scientific community," he said."Future global traceability work should and can only be further carried out on the basis of this report, rather than starting a new one."In the face of Beijing's reluctance to open up to outside investigators, experts are increasingly open to considering the theory that the virus might have leaked out of a lab, once dismissed as a conspiracy propagated by the US far-right.Even WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said that the initial probe into Wuhan's virology labs had not gone far enough, while President Joe Biden in May ordered a separate investigation into the virus origins from the US intelligence community. LAB-LEAK: China REJECTS W.H.O. proposal for 2nd study into Covid-19 origin (Report)
Beijing has declined on Friday a renewed probe by the W.H.O. – saying it supported “scientific matter” over “political interference” to find out how the worldwide coronavirus pandemic began. (AFP)
“We will not accept such an origins-tracing plan as it, in some aspects, disregards common sense and defies science" – China’s vice minister for National Health Commission.
On Thursday the W.H.O. urged China to share raw data from the earliest cases of Covid to revive its investigation into the origins of “patient zero” – calling for transparency from authorities.

B.C. judge takes aim at heart of case against Meng Wanzhou
A B.C. judge raised questions on Thursday about the allegation at the heart of the U.S. case against a Chinese business executive facing extradition from Canada.
The United States alleges Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., committed fraud by lying in a PowerPoint presentation in 2013 to her Hong Kong bankers about the company’s relationship with Skycom Tech Co. Ltd. The purpose, the U.S. says, was to evade its sanctions against Iran.
But Ms. Meng’s legal team says the U.S. Justice Department is attempting to mislead Canada. It obtained evidence that Ms. Meng told HSBC during the PowerPoint presentation that Skycom was “controllable,” and that Huawei could therefore ensure it would comply with U.S. sanctions.
