Canada Pension Plan Board heavily invested in Chinese propaganda film studios

The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board is heavily invested in Chinese propaganda film companies, account disclosures reveal.

According to Blacklock’s Reporter, the Board currently holds $7 million in Chinese Communist Party (CCP) affiliated film studio stocks. The holdings include a $4 million share in China Film Co Ltd. which is a state monopoly.

The shares are being held by the Board despite past commitments to focus on human rights when it comes to investing Canadians’ money abroad.

“We believe that strong human rights practices contribute to long term value. Engaging with companies in our portfolio on this topic is therefore an important part of our strategy,” wrote the Board.

China slams Yellen's call for 'unified front'

China on Tuesday denounced an appeal by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen for a US-European “unified front” against Chinese “unfair economic practices” and human rights abuses. “China strongly deplores and rejects Treasury Secretary Yellen’s remarks,” said a foreign ministry spokesman, Zhao Lijian. Yellen issued the appeal Tuesday during a meeting with European Union officials in Brussels. President Joe Biden is trying to revive traditional alliances following the “America First” policies of his predecessor, Donald Trump. “Together, we need to counter threats to the principles of openness, fair competition, transparency and accountability,” Yellen said, according to a text released by her department. “These challenges include China’s unfair economic practices, malign behavior and human rights abuses,” Yellen said. “The more we confront these threats with a unified front, the more successful we will be.” Zhao rejected the criticism, saying Beijing “always firmly supported” the multilateral trading system under the World Trade Organisation. The ruling Communist Party denies accusations that it steals or pressures US, European and other foreign companies to hand over technology and shields its fledgling technology and other industries from competition in violation of its WTO commitments. European governments also are frustrated that their companies are barred from acquiring most assets in China while Chinese companies, sometimes financed by state banks, have spent billions of dollars to acquire foreign technology and brands. Beijing also rejects accusations of abuses against predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities in China's northwest. Washington and the European Union have imposed travel and financial sanctions on Chinese officials blamed for abuses. “We do not bully and impose sanctions at every turn, nor do we exercise long-arm jurisdiction against other countries’ enterprises,” Zhao said, referring to US sanctions. Biden has said he wants better relations with Beijing but has yet to say whether he will roll back tariff hikes on Chinese goods and other sanctions imposed by Trump in a fight with Beijing over its technology ambitions and trade surplus. China fails to meet promises on missing Xinjiang children

Over the past two years, the Chinese authorities have repeatedly promised to help trace any children reported to be missing in Xinjiang, to prove that they haven't been forcibly separated from their parents. Those promises have not been met, reports John Sudworth.

The first time China made a public promise to help find Kalbinur Tursan's children was in 2019.

"If you have people who have lost their children, you give me the names," China's then-ambassador to the UK, Liu Xiaoming, told the BBC in a live television interview in July that year.

Father finds kidnapped son after 24-year search

A mainland man has been reunited with his kidnapped son after a 24-year search that saw him travel half a million kilometres across China on a motorbike, chasing tip-offs on the boy's whereabouts.Guo Gangtang's son was just two years and five months old when he was abducted from in front of the family home in eastern Shandong province, where he was playing unattended.Traffickers snatched the boy and sold him to a family in central China, the Ministry of Public Security said on Tuesday.Kidnapping and child trafficking became widespread in China from the 1980s, when the one-child rule was enforced, and a cultural obsession with sons fuelled demand for abducted boys. After years of searching, police told Guo on Sunday that a DNA test had confirmed that a 26-year-old teacher living in central Henan province was really Guo's long-lost son.Guo is seen sobbing into his palms while his wife hugs their son, Guo Zhen, during a reunion event in a photo released by the public security ministry."Now that the child has been found, everything can only be happy from now on," Guo said through tears in a video released by the state-run China News Service. After his son was abducted in 1997, then 27-year-old Guo quit his job and criss-crossed the country on a motorbike with large flags bearing his son's photo tied to the back. His 500,000-kilometre crusade – that included battling highway robbers, sleeping under bridges and even begging when his money ran out – inspired the 2014 blockbuster "Lost and Love".Over the years, Guo has helped seven other families find their lost children and raised awareness about child trafficking – still a taboo topic in China. Two suspects linked to the case have been arrested, state-run Global Times reported. Police did not offer details about the family that had purchased Guo's son.News of the high-profile reunion triggered an outpouring of emotion on social media with over nine million views."Parents never give up on their children! Guo's struggle shows the depth of a father's love," one user wrote on Weibo.Since launching a DNA database of missing families in 2016, police say they have helped more than 2,600 individuals kidnapped as children – some over 60 years ago – to find their biological parents, the public security ministry said.
