TLDR: #China is doubling their nukes that can reach the US mainland. // Bernard Lewis: Bilateral arms control NEEDS to be reintroduced. After the tragedy of the cold war, the world does not need another nuclear standoff. The #CubanMissileCrisis should have taught these superpowers that it only takes a push of a button for the world to end, but with China building up their nuclear armory, this cannot end well. Xi’s promise of building a “stronger” China will only bring the world death and misery.

Former Political Satire Host Leaves Hong Kong for #Taiwan: "Sorry for Not Being Able to Say Goodbye"

On July 11, 2021, Tsang Chi-ho, a radio and TV host who was suddenly sacked by the public broadcaster #RTHK in June 2021, announced on Facebook that he has left Hong Kong for Taiwan. Tsang apologized for not being able to tell and say goodbye to his friends in advance.

Tsang wrote, "I woke up and realised that a 'Hong Kong' that is not Hong Kong anymore." He said he missed his friends a lot.

"In each of our heart, there lie many people, happenings and thousands of words. The path thereafter we will continue to walk," Tsang wrote in his post.

Many netizens left words of encouragement to Tsang: "Safety comes first," "As long as you and your family are well," and "Thank you for what you have done for Hong Kong" among others.

Taiwanese netizens also told Tsang "Welcome to Taiwan".

[Editor's note: #TsangChiHo is one of the hosts of the famous political satire #Headliner produced by RTHK. Under political pressure, the long-running popular program has been suspended. The public broadcaster RTHK termimated Tsang's contract with immediate effect in June 2021, despite the popularity of another radio show he was hosting.]

Biden to warn US companies of risks of operating in Hong Kong

The Biden administration will this week warn US companies of the increasing risks of operating in Hong Kong as China asserts greater control over the financial hub.

According to three people familiar with the message, those threats include the Chinese government’s ability to gain access to data that foreign companies store in Hong Kong and a new law that allows Beijing to impose sanctions against anyone that enables foreign penalties to be implemented against Chinese groups and officials.

President Joe Biden is planning to issue the warning and impose more sanctions this week in response to Beijing’s crackdown on the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong and the genocide the US has accused Beijing of committing against Muslim Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

On Tuesday, the US will update a warning that the Trump administration issued on Xinjiang last year, according to five people familiar with the decision. The business advisory will stress the legal risks that US companies face unless they ensure that their supply chains are not implicated in forced labour in Xinjiang.

The decision was driven partly by the view that companies are not taking the issue seriously enough.

“The point of the advisory is to stress \[that] if you do not exit these supply chains you run a risk of violating US law,” said an official who did not want to be named. “We want to make clear to the business community . . . that they need to be aware of reputational, economic and legal risk of their involvement with entities involved in human rights abuses.”

While Biden is intensifying the Trump administration’s focus on Xinjiang, the move will mark the first time a US administration has issued a business advisory in relation to Hong Kong.

A person familiar with the matter said there had been dissent within the administration, with some officials concerned that the warning would discourage US companies from operating in a critical financial centre. But more hawkish officials argued successfully that companies needed to grasp the nature of the risk of doing so.

In a separate event, Biden may impose more sanctions against Chinese officials in Hong Kong, according to a person familiar with the discussions. The warning will mention recent events such as the forced closure of Apple Daily, the pro-democracy tabloid owned by Jimmy Lai.

Canada Pension Plan Board heavily invested in Chinese propaganda film studios

The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board is heavily invested in Chinese propaganda film companies, account disclosures reveal.

According to Blacklock’s Reporter, the Board currently holds $7 million in Chinese Communist Party (CCP) affiliated film studio stocks. The holdings include a $4 million share in China Film Co Ltd. which is a state monopoly.

The shares are being held by the Board despite past commitments to focus on human rights when it comes to investing Canadians’ money abroad.

“We believe that strong human rights practices contribute to long term value. Engaging with companies in our portfolio on this topic is therefore an important part of our strategy,” wrote the Board.

China slams Yellen's call for 'unified front'

China on Tuesday denounced an appeal by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen for a US-European “unified front” against Chinese “unfair economic practices” and human rights abuses. “China strongly deplores and rejects Treasury Secretary Yellen’s remarks,” said a foreign ministry spokesman, Zhao Lijian. Yellen issued the appeal Tuesday during a meeting with European Union officials in Brussels. President Joe Biden is trying to revive traditional alliances following the “America First” policies of his predecessor, Donald Trump. “Together, we need to counter threats to the principles of openness, fair competition, transparency and accountability,” Yellen said, according to a text released by her department. “These challenges include China’s unfair economic practices, malign behavior and human rights abuses,” Yellen said. “The more we confront these threats with a unified front, the more successful we will be.” Zhao rejected the criticism, saying Beijing “always firmly supported” the multilateral trading system under the World Trade Organisation. The ruling Communist Party denies accusations that it steals or pressures US, European and other foreign companies to hand over technology and shields its fledgling technology and other industries from competition in violation of its WTO commitments. European governments also are frustrated that their companies are barred from acquiring most assets in China while Chinese companies, sometimes financed by state banks, have spent billions of dollars to acquire foreign technology and brands. Beijing also rejects accusations of abuses against predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities in China's northwest. Washington and the European Union have imposed travel and financial sanctions on Chinese officials blamed for abuses. “We do not bully and impose sanctions at every turn, nor do we exercise long-arm jurisdiction against other countries’ enterprises,” Zhao said, referring to US sanctions. Biden has said he wants better relations with Beijing but has yet to say whether he will roll back tariff hikes on Chinese goods and other sanctions imposed by Trump in a fight with Beijing over its technology ambitions and trade surplus. China fails to meet promises on missing Xinjiang children

Over the past two years, the Chinese authorities have repeatedly promised to help trace any children reported to be missing in Xinjiang, to prove that they haven't been forcibly separated from their parents. Those promises have not been met, reports John Sudworth.

The first time China made a public promise to help find Kalbinur Tursan's children was in 2019.

"If you have people who have lost their children, you give me the names," China's then-ambassador to the UK, Liu Xiaoming, told the BBC in a live television interview in July that year.
