Party members must forever trust and love the CCP: Xi

President Xi Jinping on Tuesday urged Chinese Communist Party (CCP) members to “forever trust, love, and contribute to the CCP”, as he presented medals of the highest honour to 29 party members. The "July 1 medal", announced in 2017 and given out for the first time on Tuesday, is part of Xi's efforts to shore up the image of the party.Recipients included soldiers, community workers and professionals in the arts and science. The awards ceremony took place at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People with much fanfare and was broadcast live on national television. During the event, the Chinese leader said all party members need to maintain their integrity, conduct themselves in a “clean and honest” manner, and be forever loyal to the party. "We must aim to be clean people and do clean deeds. We must devote ourselves to public duties and maintain the political nature of the party to be clean," Xi said.“All comrades must have complete faith in Marxism and socialism with Chinese characteristics, and make that their lifelong aspiration. They must forever trust and love the party… keep the people close to their hearts, and dedicate everything to the party and the people."On Thursday, a major ceremony will be held to mark the 100th year since the CCP’s founding, when Xi is expected to make a longer speech to outline his vision for the party’s future.

HK Authorities Force Taiwan's representatives in Hong Kong to sign “One China Commitment”

The Mainland Affairs Council (#MAC) of Taiwan pointed out that Hong Kong Government requested the Taiwanese staff of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office to sign the “One China Commitment”.

The Taiwanese staff refused, so their visas could not be renewed. 7 staff members had to leave Hong Kong and returned to Taiwan on Jun 20, 2021.

The President of MAC in Taiwan Chiu Tai-san criticized that the “One China Commitment” was a political barrier set up by Hong Kong Government, and it violates the Taiwan-HK agreement made in 2011 “with the aim to belittle the National status of my country, and forced the staff members to bow their heads to the Beijing authorities”.

Taiwan insists on rejecting it. Chiu also stated that #CCP is undoubtedly the “shadow fighter” behind all these operations, by attempting to take advantage of the Taiwan office in Hong Kong as a tool for political conspiracy against Taiwan. Once again, it proves Hong Kong’s “One Country Two Systems” becomes only an empty title.

As a consequent, countries that have signed contracts and negotiated with Hong Kong government "shall put a question mark on the autonomy and integrity of this authority”.

Chinese Official Media Globally Recruit Reporters and KOLs are “The Media Challengers”

The Chinese official media CGTN, who has been fined and revoked license by England during the beginning of the year, recently held a “The Media Challengers” program. It is recruiting English-speaking reporters and KOLs. Those selected will receive a $10,000 bonus and get a full or part-time job in CGTN. Besides the Chinese international students, there are also some from Zimbabwe and Zambia. Some British experts believed that local audiences may think that the international community admired CCP if Western social media KOLs announce official Chinese messages on certain issues.

According to the official Weibo of CGTN, “The Media Challengers” is a “Recruitment of Global Host Reporters and KOLs” and is the first global event. It aims to “inject new power into international communication in a media-converged environment”, to recruit host, reporters, DJ and KOLs for English reports and creation. There are no limits for nationality.

China wants to control Indo-Pacific, Defense Secretary Austin says

China is set on controlling the Indo-Pacific, and without a direct line of communication between leaders in Washington and Beijing, a small incident can spark a crisis, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told lawmakers Thursday.

Austin described the lack of a hotline -- popularly called a red phone -- as a "critical" issue.

He was answering a question from Maine Sen. Angus King, who likened the situation to that portrayed in "The Guns of August," the late historian Barbara Tuchman's Pulitzer Prize-winning book on the lead-up to World War I. The June 1914 assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne quickly exploded into armed conflict, owing partly to the lack of a mechanism to de-escalate tensions.

Film director prepares to mark Tiananmen Square anniversary in B.C. after fleeing Hong Kong home

Award-winning Hong Kong filmmaker Jevons Au left his home for Canada last summer in fear of the national security law China imposed on the region in July 2020.

On Friday evening at 8 p.m. PT, Au will join dozens of other people from B.C.'s Lower Mainland at the Chinese consulate in Vancouver to commemorate those who lost their lives in the military crackdown against democracy protesters in Beijing's Tianammen Square — a vigil, he says, he's been keeping since he was in Grade 2 when he first learned of the tragedy.
"We have to remember those who fight for the freedom or democracy for the Chinese people, and their sacrifice," said Au, who now lives in Surrey, B.C., near Vancouver.

Japan minister says Taiwan needs to be protected

Japan's deputy defence minister has warned of a growing threat posed by Chinese and Russian collaboration, saying it is necessary to "wake up" to Beijing's pressure on Taiwan and protect the island "as a democratic country." Speaking to the Hudson Institute think tank, State Minister of Defence Yasuhide Nakayama questioned whether the decision of many countries, including Japan and United States, to follow a "one-China" policy that has recognised Beijing over Taipei since the 1970s would stand the test of time. "Was it right?" he asked at the online event, referring to how future generations will judge policymakers on the issue. "I don't know." Nakayama said democratic countries had to protect each other and noted that he had in the past referred to Taiwan as a "red line." "So we have to protect Taiwan as a democratic country." Nakayama said Japan and Taiwan were geographically close, and added that if something happened in Taiwan it would affect Japan's Okinawa prefecture, where US forces and their families are based. Nakayama highlighted growing threats posed by China in space, in missile technology, in the cyber domain and in nuclear and conventional forces, and said that under President Xi Jinping's leadership it had "aggressive, aggressive ... thought and will." "So wake up. We have to wake up," he said. Beijing was quick to react, accusing Nakayama of making "erroneous" claims. "We deplore the erroneous remarks by the senior official of the Japanese government, and we have lodged solemn representations," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, adding that Nakayama had "falsely accused" China over "normal national defence developments." "This is highly sinister, dangerous and irresponsible. This politician also openly called Taiwan a country, in serious violation of the China-Japan joint statement," Wang said at a regular media briefing. "We urge the Japanese government to make a clarification and ensure this will not happen again." (Reuters)
