#ChinaDaily Caught Promoting China with Stolen Photo of #Switzerland, After Criticizing Western Media's Credibility

China Daily, China's state-owned newspaper, released a satirical cartoon via its Twitter account on May 10, 2021, suggesting that "western media lacks credibility".

The account subsequently shared a promotional video on sightseeing in China, which showed a natural landscape with the hashtag “#ChineGlamour”. However, German and French TV station #ARTE(Association Relative à la Télévision Européenne) discovered that the landscape image was taken by a travel blogger, and was in fact recorded in #Brienz, Switzerland. The image is then flipped horizontally, and the blogger's watermark cropped out.

The blogger criticised China Daily’s #plagiarism, and mocked them for promoting China with a stolen picture of Switzerland. China Daily had since deleted the video without apologies.

G7 Summit Published a joint statement Criticising China and Supporting Taiwan’s Participation in the World Health Forum

Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Member States of the Group of Seven Industrial Countries (G7) announced a joint statement after the meeting on 3 May in England London. In the context of discussing the affairs of various countries, most paragraphs talked about China, concerning the destruction of Hong Kong’s electoral system and the violation of human rights in Xinjiang. In addition, the statement also mentioned the Taiwan Strait, South China Sea, etc., which requires relevant countries to act under international rules. Besides, the statement also mentioned supporting Taiwan to participate in World Health Forum, believing that each country can be benefited from Taiwan’s successful anti-epidemic experience.

Six among the 87 paragraphs in the joint statement discussed China, which is more than Russia (4 paragraphs) and Myanmar (4 paragraphs). The statement described China as a “major power”, and encouraged China to follow the international rules. The 15th paragraph mentioned Hong Kong, concerning China’s damage to the democratic elements in Hong Kong’s electoral system, and demanded that the Chinese and Hong Kong regimes stopped targeting people who fight for human rights, freedom, and democracy. The statement again requested China to respect human rights and basic democracy in Xinjiang; to pay attention to the actions damaging freedom and fair economic system, and to stop committing or supporting violations of intellectual property rights through the internet.

Intrusion Truth details work of suspected Chinese hackers who are under indictment in US

Intrusion Truth, a mysterious group known for exposing suspected Chinese cyber-espionage operations, on Thursday published a new investigation that traced front companies allegedly used by two Chinese men whom a U.S. grand jury indicted last year.

The findings shed light on a dynamic that U.S. law enforcement officials say is increasingly common: foreign intelligence services’ use of front companies to try to conceal their hacking operations. The details also come at a time when Biden administration officials are dealing with the fallout of another suspected Chinese hacking campaign in which attackers leveraged widely used Microsoft software.

Huawei defense to ask Canada court for delay in CFO's extradition hearings

The defense team for Huawei's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, will ask a Canadian court to delay upcoming hearings in her U.S. extradition case, the court said on Friday.

Meng's U.S. extradition hearings have lasted more than two years and she is scheduled to be back in the British Columbia Supreme Court on April 26.

A source familiar with the matter told Reuters the application was a result of an agreement announced last week in a Hong Kong court between Huawei Technologies Co Ltd (HWT.UL) and HSBC (HSBA.L) regarding publication of internal documents relating to the fraud allegations against Meng

Xinjiang camps 'turning ghosts into humans'

A mainland official said on Tuesday that Beijing chose to build "education and training centres" instead of new prisons in Xinjiang, and efforts to remove extremist thoughts from people's minds have turned "ghosts into humans".At a press conference, Xinjiang government spokesman Xu Guixiang rejected claims that Beijing is carrying out genocide in the region, saying the authorities have simply been helping "brainwashed" people avoid jail."[They] did not really understand what religion meant and could not tell what was legal or not," he said.Removing ideas of terrorism and extremism from the brains of those in the "education centres" converted them "from ghosts to humans," Xu explained."If we did things the Western way, we would simply have had to give them a prison sentence. But we think these people are also victims themselves, so we chose to educate and transform them."A woman presented as a former teacher told the press conference that claims men in the centres have been abused and women sexually assaulted are nothing but lies, and everyone's rights were well protected.A man described as a former student said his life has improved greatly since he "graduated" from one of the centres.
