This past Saturday was the 33rd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. In remembrance of this tragic event, over the weekend, some UCSD students displayed LED candles and copies of newspaper reports on the tragedy. The setup was destroyed later at night by fellow UCSD students: candles kicked away and newspaper ripped off.
The memorial installation has since been restored by student volunteers, but for a second time the newspaper along with a politely-worded letter were ripped out. The letter sincerely urged those that disagree with the memorial to stay calm and consider dialogue instead of violent destruction.
We would like to draw UCSD’s attention to these incidents as such acts of disrespect should not be happening in a campus that values open communication, integrity, and inclusion.
