Dec 18: Founder of Apple Daily, Jimmy Lai, along with three Apple companies, is being tried in the High Court for charges of conspiring with foreign forces and conspiracy to publish seditious publications. The case raises concerns about how the national security law threatens human rights in Hong Kong. Notably, Lai has already spent over 3 years in jail before the trial, highlighting the government's practice of punishing political prisoners even before their day in court. Dec 18: According to an exclusive investigation by The Washington Post, Andy Li Yu-hin, one of the "12 Hong Kongers," may have been coerced into accusing Jimmy Lai, the founder of Apple Daily. During his detention in China, Li Yu-hin faced torture and harsh conditions. He was forced to sit on a concrete stool for prolonged periods and experienced sleep deprivation. Upon his return to Hong Kong, Li Yu-hin's testimony implicating Jimmy Lai raises concerns about the potential influence and pressure exerted on him. This case sheds light on the ongoing complexities surrounding the 2019 Hong Kong protests. #HongKong #12HongKongers #JimmyLai #AppleDaily #PressFreedom #Coercion #HumanRights #PhotonMedia

In the July 1 Legislative Council riot case, actor Gregory Wong and 5 others stood trial. After 34 days of hearings, 4 were convicted of rioting, including Wong. One defendant, Lam Kam-kwan, also found guilty of criminal damage. The charges against 2 self-proclaimed journalists were not established, but they were convicted of "entering or remaining in the meeting hall." Two reporters were granted bail, while the rest remain in custody. Sentencing set for March 16. Concerns raised over press freedom in the verdict.

The conviction of journalists in the July 1 Legislative Council riot case raises concerns about the Hong Kong court system's treatment of journalists and its alleged neglect of evidence. The verdict appears to overlook the importance of press freedom and fails to consider the evidence presented. This raises worries about potential limitations on journalists' ability to carry out their work. Upholding a free and independent press is crucial for a democratic society. #PressFreedom

Hong Kong Security Bureau Chief Tang Ping-keung continues to accuse Ted Hui and Chris Patten, but fails to acknowledge that the proposed Article 23 legislation could further undermine freedom in Hong Kong. Despite concerns raised by critics, Tang maintains that the bill is aimed at safeguarding press freedom and freedom of speech. However, many remain skeptical about the potential implications of this legislation on Hong Kong's cherished values of liberty and autonomy.

During the trial, Jimmy Lai, founder of Apple Daily, revealed that he was not concerned about the possibility of his arrest. Lai expressed his belief that if he were to be apprehended, it would serve as evidence of the Chinese Communist Party's suppression of human rights and press freedom. He further stated his confidence that countries like the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe would not stand idly by in such a scenario. The trial continues to unfold. #JimmyLai #AppleDaily #FreePoliticalPrisoners #PressFreedom

Selina Cheng, the current HKJA president, was dismissed by WSJ allegedly due to her presidency role. This event has raised concerns about press freedom and the challenges faced by journalists in Hong Kong. Cheng's situation underscores the complexities journalists encounter in the region.

Sep 13: Hong Kong's Press Freedom Under Pressure

Alarming report from the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA):

• 15 media organizations targeted
• Dozens of journalists and families threatened
• 36+ individuals "named" online with accusations
• 8 journalists' addresses received intimidating letters

🔍 Key developments:
- Anonymous "patriots" sending threatening messages
- Attempts to pressure journalists to quit jobs/unions
- Multiple cases reported to police

The HKJA condemns these intimidation attempts and calls for investigations.

Press Freedom Decline:
Since 2019, journalistic freedom in Hong Kong has significantly decreased. The Chinese Communist Party's increasing influence and policy changes have led to a more restrictive environment for independent journalism.

These recent incidents highlight the growing challenges faced by Hong Kong's media, raising concerns about the future of free press in the city.
