Youngsters should refute smearing: liaison office

The deputy head of Beijing's liaison office in Hong Kong, Liu Guangyuan, said on Thursday it's the young people's responsibility to hit back at the smearing campaign against the SAR and Beijing's policies on Hong Kong. Speaking at an event hosted by the Y.Elites Association, Liu said certain countries, which he didn't name, have been carrying out the smearing for some time.He said young Hongkongers should make good use of their fluency in English, Cantonese and Mandarin to tell good Hong Kong stories and spread the voice of China.Speaking at the same event, Chief Executive John Lee stressed the SAR government attaches great emphasis on youth development work.He added that he hopes society will join hands to help nurture young people who have an international perspective, while loving the country and loving Hong Kong.

HKJA chairman Ronson Chan given 5-day jail term

Hong Kong Journalists Association chairman Ronson Chan was on Monday given a five-day prison term after a court convicted him of obstructing police while reporting on an event.Chan, 42, who works for online news outlet Channel C, was arrested in September last year after he refused to show his ID card to plainclothes officers at a meeting of homeowners in Mong Kok.The journalist, who pleaded not guilty, told West Kowloon Court that he was simply reluctant to hand over the card after an incident during the protests in 2019.A policeman had held up Chan's ID card to a TV camera which was live streaming.Chan's lawyer urged magistrate Leung Ka-kie to impose a non-custodial sentence, saying the journalist's actions were not premediated. But Leung rejected this, saying Chan could have given the officers his card after they showed him their warrant cards.Despite receiving a prison term, Chan was released on bail pending an appeal. He was banned from leaving Hong Kong in the meantime and was ordered to hand over his travel documents.

Tell more good stories, guard against anti-HK lies: CE

Chief Executive John Lee on Thursday said media workers should be on "the right side of history" and tell good Hong Kong stories in the international arena, while warning against the re-emergence of anti-Hong Kong forces.Speaking at a reception organised by the media industry to celebrate the 74th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Lee spoke out against anti-China forces who he said were concocting lies about Hong Kong in the international arena. He said they wanted to perpetrate a "new lie".“No matter what crimes this person commits, he cannot be touched, and he would in turn accuse you of undermining press freedom,” Lee said.“From day one when he cloaks himself as a part of the media, he is abusing this identity as part of a plot to commit crimes and even endanger national security.”Lee added the authorities will pursue anyone who breaks the law, regardless of their background and profession.
