Two more plead guilty in subversion trial

Two more defendants accused of conspiring to commit subversion over unofficial Legco primary polls in 2020 have admitted to the charges, as the trial started on Monday.Former district councillor Ng Kin-wai and businessman Lam King-nam pleaded guilty to their charges. The 47 defendants are accused of attempting to win enough seats in the legislature to paralyse the government.Sixteen defendants have earlier pleaded not guilty, among them former lawmakers Helena Wong, Lam Cheuk-ting and Leung Kwok-hung, and former district councillors Kalvin Ho and Clarisse Yeung.Lawyers for the defendants told the court they need more time to prepare for the case, saying they'd recently received a large amount of new information.The prosecution, meanwhile, said four of the 31 defendants who pleaded guilty will be summoned to give evidence. The national security trial is expected to last 90 days. It's heard by High Court judges Andrew Chan, Alex Lee and Johnny Chan. The hearing is taking place at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court, where bigger courtrooms are available.

According to CNBC, U.S. made an announcement to sanction 6 Chinese areospace companies after shooting down what is suspected to be a Chinese spy balloon. Those companies are identified as supporting the spy program in China.

“The PRC’s use of high-altitude balloons violates our sovereignty and threatens U.S. national security,” said Alan Estevez, undersecretary of commerce for industry and security, using the acronym for the People’s Republic of China.

“Today’s action makes clear that entities that seek to harm U.S. national security and sovereignty will be cut off from accessing U.S. technologies,” Estevez said in a statement from the Commerce Department.

British MPs accused HSBC for "Doing dirty works" for Beijing. An all-party parliamentary report was released accusing the London based bank supporting an anti-democracy law imposed by Beijing in Hong Kong. The report also mentioned that the bank kowtowed to Beijing to secure its profit.

The parliamentary group found HSBC has helped Beijing to isolate Hong Kongers who turned to the British Government for safety and assistance.

According to Global and Mail, CSIS warned Trudeau about Toronto-area politician's alleged ties to Chinese diplomats. Michael Chan, mayor of Markham and former Ontario Liberal cabinet minister, is suspected to meet with Chinese intelligence operatives in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections. Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) also has a dossier on him related to his activities.

Chan, denied the accusation and claimed he is a loyal Canadian.
